Considers archaeological methods of studying irrigation systems, particularly the diffusion of hydraulic techniques and institutions from the Islamic world to medieval Spain; the hardware of water control and the institutions of water allotment; and the influence of the medieval Spanish irrigation systems on those in Texas and British India. Of the communal institutions elaborated by medieval Spaniards, the most significant and longest-lived were the irrigation communities which the Muslims had established centuries earlier in the Valencian region.
