O ano de 2008 foi um divisor de águas no universo empresarial da região oeste do Rio Grande do Norte, principalmente para o setor supermercadista. Em sua principal cidade, Mossoró, um fenômeno que ocorrera na capital potiguar nos anos 90, e ao longo do tempo em outras partes do Brasil afora, instalou-se em solo mossoroense: a entrada dos poderosos Players internacionais da indústria supermercadista. O Atacadão do grupo francês Carrefour, o Hipermercado Bom Preço e o Maxxi Atacado da rede americana Walmart. Os novos entrantes se inseriram no setor local com todo o vigor peculiar aos líderes de mercado: marca forte, vasto mix de produtos, publicidade arrojada e preços muito competitivos provenientes dos ganhos de escala, que somente os grandes conglomerados são capazes de dominar. Por meio de uma pesquisa quanti-qualitativa ancorada na teoria do desenvolvimento econômico de Schumpeter e no modelo porteriano de análise da estrutura da indústria, esta obra discorre sobre as estratégias adotadas pelas redes locais de supermercado no enfrentamento às marcas estrangeiras, visando não somente à permanência no mercado, mas sobretudo a obter competitividade empresarial.
