Toward a Cultural Archive of la Movida revisits the cultural and social milieu in which laMovida, an explosion of artistic production in the late 1970s and early 1980s, was articulated discursively, aesthetically, socially, and politically. We connect this experience with a broader national and international context that takes it beyond the city of Madrid and outside the borders of Spain. This collection of essays links the political and social undertakings of this cultural period with youth movements in Spain and other international counter-cultural or underground movements. Moving away from biographical experiences or the identification of further participants and works that belong to laMo...
Disrupting Maize undertakes a critical interrogation of maize, the staple food and symbol of the Mexican nation. As the centre of origin and genetic diversification of maize, the Mexican territory is regarded today as being under threat of irreversible ‘contamination’ by genetically engineered maize, an imported biotechnological product. When the first evidences of such ‘contamination’ were found in 2001, an anti-GM movement was born that quickly became articulated as a defence of cultural identity and national sovereignty. Disrupting Maize mobilizes contemporary theoretical resources in a critical examination of the cultural politics at work in the Mexican defence of maize. From such an examination ‘biotechnological disruption’ emerges provocatively as constitutive of Mexican nationalism rather than externally imposed to it by corporate players. Furthermore, it is provocatively conceptualized as a gift, that is, as the promise of a more democratic Mexico.

Interactions between photography and performance during a chronological period ranging from the so-called “nuevos comportamientos artísticos” (Spanish conceptual art) at the beginnings of 70s, to the definitive institutionalization of the “tableau form” in the 80s, are analyzed in this research. This is a complex and not lineal trip, with particular interest in the Spanish context, since some important changes affecting political and cultural life took place during this period, conditioning the process object of the present work. The work tries to discuss those performance theories that emphasize the “liveness”, and doing so, pushed the photography into the background. By puttin...
The exciting historical novel by Howard Headworth takes us to the 1480s in Spain. For the Spaniards it is the dawn of the golden age of the country. For the moors of Al-Andalus in the south, it is the beginning of a bitter harvest. And Far west, a new world beckons..... Glorious descriptions of battles and conflicts, the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition, the tracing of historical events leading to the entrance of the Catholic monarchs in Granada in 1492, a panoply of characters, profiles of the traditions and skills of the Muslim peasants in Al-Andalus, and finally the first voyage of Christopher Columbus to the Indies, make this book a unique treasure. Howard Headworth lives in Almeria, Spain, for twenty years. He was born in Wales and studied geology at the university there and in London. He uses his great experience as a scientific director as well as his passion for the history of his adopted country in this historical novel.
