Mammalian Fauna of the Judith River Formation (Late Cretaceous, Judithian), Northcentral Montana

Approximately 12 million years before the extinction of the dinosaurs, a diverse terrestrial fauna inhabited what is now northcentral Montana. The author describes and evaluates the systematic relationships of the large mammalian fauna of this area, which included rodent-like multituberculates, primitive therians, marsupials, and early eutherian mammals, and also analyzes the biogeography of mammalian faunas of the Judithian age.

Remarks on the Fossil Turtles Accredited to the Judith River Formation (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from Remarks on the Fossil Turtles Accredited to the Judith River Formation Lack of space at that time precluded the full presentation of the data on which the above statements were based. Inasmuch as this mild remonstrance does not appear to have attracted attention, and since the turtles are still being used to prove close relation ship between the Judith River and Lance (ceratops beds) for mations, it seems opportune to set forth the facts as they are In a paper3 just published Dr. 0. P. Hay writes as follows: My study of the fossil turtles indicates that the species of these animals rarely pass from one epoch to another. If they have ever done so they passed from the Judith River...

"Geologic investigation of the late Cretaceous Judith River Formation in the area just north of the Judith River on the Missouri River in north-central Montana has resulted in the discovery of varied vertebrate forms. The beds are mainly freshwater continental deposits consisting of crossbedded channel sandstones, gray siltstones, and carbonaceous shales with occasional seams of lignitic coal. The stratigraphic sequence consists of the Marias River Shale overlain by the Eagle, Claggett, Judith River, and Bearpaw formations. The last four constitute Montana Group. The Judith River Formation is Campanian in age as determined by its position between the fossiliferous marine Claggett and Bearpaw...
