When floating among the kelp, Calvin shed all the responsibilities he shouldered and felt free. He felt anything was possible. From an underground tea brewer concocting guerrilla potions to a granddaughter rediscovering her family through an inherited snack shop, this collection of soft sci-fi short stories explores the memories and thoughts of nine in a world of marine biology and memory technology. The Memory Extracts is an independent companion anthology, expanding on the dystopian world created in The Vending Portal.

This IBM® Redbooks® publication provides advice and technical information about optimizing and tuning application code to run on systems that are based on the IBM POWER7® and POWER7+TM processors. This advice is drawn from application optimization efforts across many different types of code that runs under the IBM AIX® and Linux operating systems, focusing on the more pervasive performance opportunities that are identified, and how to capitalize on them. The technical information was developed by a set of domain experts at IBM. The focus of this book is to gather the right technical information, and lay out simple guidance for optimizing code performance on the IBM POWER7 and POWER7+ sys...

Defining Student Success

The key to success, our culture tells us, is a combination of talent and hard work. Why then, do high schools that supposedly subscribe to this view send students to college at such dramatically different rates? Why do students from one school succeed while students from another struggle? To the usual answer—an imbalance in resources—this book adds a far more subtle and complicated explanation. Defining Student Success shows how different schools foster dissimilar and sometimes conflicting ideas about what it takes to succeed—ideas that do more to preserve the status quo than to promote upward mobility. Lisa Nunn’s study of three public high schools reveals how students’ beliefs ab...

Moving Beyond Borders

Moving Beyond Borders examines the life and accomplishments of Julian Samora, the first Mexican American sociologist in the United States and the founding father of the discipline of Latino studies. Detailing his distinguished career at the University of Notre Dame from 1959 to 1984, the book documents the history of the Mexican American Graduate Studies program that Samora established at Notre Dame and traces his influence on the evolution of border studies, Chicano studies, and Mexican American studies. Samora's groundbreaking ideas opened the way for Latinos to understand and study themselves intellectually and politically, to analyze the complex relationships between Mexicans and Mexican...

Yakama Rising

Yakama Rising argues that Indigenous communities themselves have the answers to the persistent social problems they face. This book contributes to discourses of Indigenous social change by articulating a Yakama decolonizing praxis that advances the premise that grassroots activism and cultural revitalization are powerful examples of decolonization.

Quantification of Building Seismic Performance Factors

This report describes a recommended methodology for reliably quantifying building system performance and response parameters for use in seismic design. The recommended methodology (referred to herein as the Methodology) provides a rational basis for establishing global seismic performance factors (SPFs), including the response modification coefficient (R factor), the system overstrength factor, and deflection amplification factor (Cd), of new seismic-force-resisting systems proposed for inclusion in model building codes. The purpose of this Methodology is to provide a rational basis for determining building seismic performance factors that, when properly implemented in the seismic design process, will result in equivalent safety against collapse in an earthquake, comparable to the inherent safety against collapse intended by current seismic codes, for buildings with different seismic-force-resisting systems.
