Politics and Parentela in Paraiba
This richly documented work focuses on the parentela (extended family), including Epitacio's, to illustrate the role bonds of blood, marriage, and friendship played in formal politics at local, state, and national levels throughout the Old Republic (1889-1930). Originally published in 1987. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Ao migrar para a cidade de Manaus, o sujeito traz consigo sua vivência, suas histórias de vida. Este livro narra o aspecto cultural desta vivência do migrante, que escolheu a capital do Estado do Amazonas para reescrever sua história. A memória afetiva dos migrantes entrevistados durante o desenvolvimento deste livro demonstrou ser diversa, sendo expressa através de sua cultura musical. As canções ouvidas pelos migrantes, quando ainda moravam em sua terra natal, fazem parte de suas experiências de vida. A partir das letras destas melodias, desenvolvemos o livro para além de um estudo sobre migração em Manaus. Para isso, nos concentramos no aspecto cultural. A música desperta realidades, traz de volta sentimentos vivenciados que se incorporaram nas letras das canções, simbolizando uma narrativa de vida. As canções são como uma ferramenta de recuperação desta memória; ao tentar recuperá-la, buscamos descrever suas marcas deixadas na vida dos entrevistados, que carregam consigo suas músicas mesmo na adversidade, transparecendo suas singularidades.
Twenty-First Century Arab and African Diasporas in Spain, Portugal and Latin America
This volume considers the Arabic and African diasporas through the underexplored Afro-Hispanic, Luso-Africans, and Mahjari (South American and Mexican authors of Arab descent) experiences in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. Utilizing both established and emerging approaches, the authors explore the ways in which individual writers and artists negotiate the geographical, cultural, and historical parameters of their own diasporic trajectories influenced by their particular locations at home and elsewhere. At the same time, this volume sheds light on issues related to Spain, Portugal, and Latin American racial, ethnic, and sexual boundaries; the appeal of images of the Middle East and Africa in the contemporary marketplace; and the role of Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American economic crunches in shaping attitudes towards immigration. This collection of thought-provoking chapters extends the concepts of diaspora and transnationalism, forcing the reader to reassess their present limitations as interpretive tools. In the process, Afro-Hispanic, Afro-Portuguese, and Mahjaris are rendered visible as national actors and transnational citizens.
