Respiratory System

Approximately ten years have elapsed since the second volume of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) Monographs on Pathology of Laboratory Animals, Respiratory System, was first completed. New in formation of interest to pathologists has developed at a rather remark able pace during these years. Exceptional progress has been made in the routine identification of enzymes and cell products in respiratory cells. A better understanding has developed on the functions of cells of the respiratory tract and of the mechanisms involved in cell metabolism, particularly those involving toxins and carcinogens. Global Technoscience and Responsibility

The 21st century is shaped by globalisation, worldwide electronic information dissemination and planetary presence of media and IT networks. The information society became a high-tech industrial or systems-technological super-information society with ubiquitous IT accessibility. Attending to techno-science super-structures and systems technocracies the book tackles problems of social responsibility, humanitarianism, ecological policies, and a philosophy of technology, planning, risk assessment, decision-making, globalisation, creativity, achievement-orientation, etc. for a humane future orientation. Philosophy should go systems- and practice-oriented, normative and optimistic again.

The Plays of Ernst Toller

This book is the fullest and most detailed study yet published in English of Ernst Toller's plays and their most significant productions. In particular the productions directed by Karl-Heinz Martin, Jurgen Fehling and Erwin Piscator are closely analyzed and the author demonstrates how, brilliant though they were, they obscured or even distorted Toller's intentions. The plays are seen as eminently stage-worthy while worth lies in Toller's use of language, both in prose and inverse. The neglected puppet-play The Scorned Lovers' Revenge is analyzed from a new perspective in the light, both of its language and its sexual theme, so important in Toller's writings as a whole. The reader is led to appreciate why Toller was regarded as the most outstanding German dramatist of his generation until, after his death in 1939 his reputation was overlaid by that of Brecht. This book should do much to restore Toller to his proper place in theatre history.
