Women, Work and Family in Britain and Germany
Many working women have to face a serious conflict between the demands of their work and the demands of family life. Changing perceptions about the role of women are making this conflict even more complicated. Innovative work patterns are needed to alleviate this conflict. Originally published in 1986, this book, based on extensive original research, examines how working women manage the ‘balancing act’ between family and work. It considers their attitudes to work, to their families and to their managers and fellow workers and it explores the role of trade unions, employers and the state. By drawing on data gathered in different countries and in different ‘styles’ of working environment it contrasts differing responses to the same basic conflict.

Takes a comparative perspective on family life and childhood in the past half century in Russia and Eastern Europe, highlighting similarities and differences. State Symbols
After World War II Germans not only had to rebuild, they had to redefine their national political identity as well. This book traces how state symbols such as national colors, anthems, holidays, capital cities, and postage stamps were used to legitimize the two Germanies from 1949 to 1959. Although the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) developed distinct post-war identities, the one cannot be understood apart from the other, for they were in direct competition to define the same state symbols. The study of symbols offers valuable insights into the realms of identity formation and of politics, that is, how symbols can promote political integration. By examining the creation of state symbols and the processes by which they were established in the public realm, Feinstein evaluates the extent to which German political culture overcame the Nazi past to legitimize both a republican and a socialist system. This book is especially relevant to scholars who want to understand the common ground upon which the citizens of today’s unified Germany can construct a shared identity.

European Myths
The history of the European Community/European Union's (EC/EU) development is a narrative of crises generated and resolved. To date, the resolution of crises in community affairs has furthered European integration. The characteristic pattern of integration is dialectical-two steps forward and one step back-with crises both accounting for the steps backward and forward. This book examines why the crises were constructively resolved, rather than the often explored how of the resolutions. This work contends that European myths, which emerged from Europe's cataclysmic experiences in World War I and II, cement the member states within the EC/EU, and lead to greater social, economic, and political integration with the EC/EU. During the periodic crises, the European myths have eliminated every choice except the choice to move European integration forward. Professor Sam-Sang Jo's analysis argues that once the European myths weaken, the tensions among EU member states are likely to escalate.
Families with Small Children in Eastern and Western Europe
Published in 1997, the aim of this study is to address comparative perspectives on gender and family life in western and eastern Europe. The focus is on the way in which family policy measures relating to the reconciliation of work and family are viewed and used by employed parents with small children. Another purpose is to consider how compatibility between family and employment is perceived by the parents, and its implications for partnership, gender balance, and parent-child relationships. The book also discusses the consequences and lessons which can be drawn from these studies for the purpose of family policy initiatives.
