Landscape and Structures
Landscapes and Structures is a striking visual tour of Switzerland's public structural landmarks through the personal view of the internationally renowned civil engineer Jürg Conzett. The book is published in conjunction with the Swiss pavilion at the Twelfth International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, which Conzett curated. Civil engineering structures comprise bridges, tunnels, passageways, and other built transport routes; and Conzett and photographer Martin Linsi aimed to showcase examples that demonstrate architectural aspirations and a special relationship to the landscape. The book's twenty chapters highlight such works as the Sittertobelrailway bridge and the Susten mountain pass that contribute to pertinent discussions in design and engineering--including questions of design within the cultural heritage movement, the reciprocal relationship between a townscape and its structures, and the tradition of relying on local materials and craftsmanship. As a whole, the book serves as an insider's tour of how Switzerland's most notable public structures highlight and compliment the landscape.

Landscape and Structures presents civil engineering structures which stand out by virtue of their special relationship with the Swiss landscape: bridges, footbridges, tunnels, retaining walls, passageways etc., i.e. structures serving traffic routes. Civil engineer Jürg Conzett and photographer Martin Linsi focus their interest on works of architectural merit which take account not just of engineering and efficiency, but also of the responses they evoke in the individuals using or looking at them. The book is published in conjunction with the exhibition curated by Jürg Conzett at the Swiss pavilion within the 12th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.
Swiss Sensibility
Contemporary architecture in Switzerland is influenced by Peter Zumthor and Herzog & de Meuron, recipients of the Swiss Pritzker Prize, as well as a number of other prominent architects. The book presents 25 buildings in Switzerland designed by 16 influential Swiss architects: The range covers high-density urban developments through to rural sites in the alpine environment, with examples of traditional craftsmanship and materials, and modern construction technology and engineering. Large-format photographs illustrate the buildings’ proportions, materials, and details. Four authors analyze the Swiss building culture and its high architectural quality from an insider’s and an outsider’s point of view. In a detailed interview, Peter Zumthor explains his approach to architectural design.
