Transaction Management Support for Cooperative Applications

Transaction Management Support for Cooperative Application is a comprehensive report on a successful international project, called TRANSCOOP, carried out from 1994 to 1997 by a group of European scientists. But the book is also much more than that, namely, an ambitious attempt to integrate Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), Workflow Management Systems (WFMS), and Transaction Processing (TP) technologies. The very term {\em cooperative transactions} is in itself contradictory. Cooperation technologies, such as CSCW, aim at providing a framework for information exchange between cooperating (human) participants. In contrast, traditional transaction technologies allow concurrent users t...

Workflow Management Systems and Interoperability

Workflow management systems (WFMS) are enjoying increasing popular ity due to their ability to coordinate and streamline complex organizational processes within organizations of all sizes. Organizational processes are de scriptions of an organization's activities engineered to fulfill its mission such as completing a business contract or satisfying a specific customer request. Gaining control of these processes allows an organization to reengineer and improve each process or adapt them to changing requirements. The goal of WFMSs is to manage these organizational processes and coordinate their execution. was demonstrated in the first half The high degree of interest in WFMSs of the 1990s by a...

Distributed Applications and Interoperable Systems

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th IFIP WG 6.1 International Conference on Distributed Applications and Interoperable Systems, DAIS 2008, held in Oslo, Norway, in June 2008. The DAIS conference was held as a joint event in federation with the 10th IFIP WG 6.1 International Conference on Formal Methods for Open Object-Based Distributed Systems (FMOODS 2008) and the 10th International Conference on Coordination Models and Languages (Coordination 2008). The 19 revised full papers presented together with 6 revised work-in-progress papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 66 submissions. The papers cover all aspects of distributed applications and interoperable systems, including their design, implementation, operation and maintenance, as well as supporting middleware, experimental studies, and advances to software engineering methodologies and tools. The papers are organized in topical sections on service orientation, QoS management and composition, dependability and reliability, peer-to-peer overlays, adaptation, model-driven development, components, protocols and interactions, as well as pervasive computing,

Tools and Algorithms for the Construction of Analysis of Systems

ETAPS’99 is the second instance of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software. ETAPS is an annual federated conference that was established in 1998 by combining a number of existing and new conferences. This year it comprises ve conferences (FOSSACS, FASE, ESOP, CC, TACAS), four satellite workshops (CMCS, AS, WAGA, CoFI), seven invited lectures, two invited tutorials, and six contributed tutorials. The events that comprise ETAPS address various aspects of the system - velopment process, including speci cation, design, implementation, analysis and improvement. The languages, methodologies and tools which support these - tivities are all well within its scope. Dieren t blends of theory and practice are represented, with an inclination towards theory with a practical motivation on one hand and soundly-based practice on the other. Many of the issues involved in software design apply to systems in general, including hardware systems, and the emphasis on software is not intended to be exclusive.

Distributed Network Systems

Both authors have taught the course of “Distributed Systems” for many years in the respective schools. During the teaching, we feel strongly that “Distributed systems” have evolved from traditional “LAN” based distributed systems towards “Internet based” systems. Although there exist many excellent textbooks on this topic, because of the fast development of distributed systems and network programming/protocols, we have difficulty in finding an appropriate textbook for the course of “distributed systems” with orientation to the requirement of the undergraduate level study for today’s distributed technology. Specifically, from - to-date concepts, algorithms, and models to...

Database Programming Languages

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Database Programming Languages, DBPL-6, held in Estes Park, Colorado, USA, in August 1997. The 20 revised full papers presented have gone through two rounds of reviewing and selection. Also included are two invited talks, the transcription of a panel discussion and an introductory survey by the volume editors. The papers address all current aspects of database programming languages, in particular spatial databases, typing, query languages for new applications, views, expressive power, aggregate queries, cooperative work, and transactions.
