With cardiovascular disease remaining one of the primary causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, there is a great need to further understand the molecular basis of this disease class and develop new therapeutic or preventative measures. Cardiovascular Diseases: Nutritional and Therapeutic Interventions presents up-to-date information on the pathobiology of cardiovascular diseases, emphasizing emerging therapeutics and nutritional interventions. The book is divided into four parts: epidemiology, epigenetics, pathobiology, and therapies for cardiovascular diseases. Part I details epidemiological studies, highlighting the extent of the clinical problem. Part II describes the genetic and, p...

How the Immune System Recognizes Self and Nonself

How do you discriminate yourself from other people? This question must sound odd to you since you easily recognize others at a glance and, without any effort, would not mistake them for yourself. However, it is not always easy for some people to discriminate themselves from others. For example, patients with schi- phrenia often talk with “others” living inside themselves. Thus it is likely that n- mally your brain actively recognizes and remembers the information belonging to yourself and discriminates it from the information provided by others, although you are not conscious of it. This brain function must have been particularly important for most animals to protect their lives from ene...

Evolutionary Gerontology and Geriatrics

This book provides concrete scientific basis that we can conceive the possibility of modifying or even completely canceling aging process, despite the fact that aging is commonly regarded as the result of the overall effects of many uncontrollable degenerative phenomena. The authors illustrate in detail the mechanisms by which cells and the whole organism age. Actions by which it is possible, or will be possible within a limited time, to operate for modifying aging are also debated. The discussion is conducted within the frame and the concepts of evolutionary medicine, which is also indispensable for distinguishing between the manifestations of aging and: (i) diseases that worsen with age, a...

CMBEBIH 2021

This book presents cutting-edge research and developments in the field of medical and biological engineering. It gathers the proceedings of the International Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering, CMBEBIH 2021, held partly virtually, partly physically, on April 21–24, 2021, from and in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Focusing on the goal to ‘Stay Focused’, contributions report on both basic and applied research in a wide range of related fields, such as biomedical signal processing, medical physics and imaging, biosensors and micro/nanotechnologies, biomaterials, biomechanics and robotics, cardiorespiratory, endocrine and neural systems engineering. Novel models, methods and technologies for bio- and health informatics, as well as applications of machine learning and AI in health care, and advances in genetic engineering are also highlighted. All in all, this book provides academics and professionals with novel, practical solutions to solve the current problems in biomedical research and applications, and a source of inspiration for improving medicine and health care in the future.

Sünen-i Ebi Davud Ve Tercemesi-3

"Sünen-i Ebi Davud Ve Tercemesi Yayınevi: ERKAM YAYINLARI Yazar: İbrahim Koçaşlı Sünen-i Ebi Davud Ve Tercemesi Alemlerin Rabbı, Rahman ve Rahim olan Allah'a hamd eder, Peygamberlerin sonuncusu efendimiz Muhammedi Mustafa'ya sallallahu aleyhi ve sellem ve O'nun aline, eshabına sonsuz salat-u selâm sunarım. İslâm'ın ana kaynakları dörttür; 1. Kitap, 2. Sünnet, 3. îcma', 4. Fukahanın kıyasıdır. SÜNNET: Peygamber Efendimizin sallallahu aleyhi ve sellem sözleri, hareketleri ve takririnden ibarettir. Rasûlullah sallallahu aleyhi ve sellem'in sünnetini bize en iyi şekilde haber veren kaynaklar hadîs mecmualarıdır. Bunlardan Buharî, Müslim, Ebû Dâvud, Tirmizî, Nesâî ve İbn-i Mâce'nin mecmuasına Kütüb-i Sitte ( Altı Kitap ) adı verilir, işte biz burada bu altı kitaptan Ebû Davud'un Sünen'i üzerinde duracak ve Müslim'den ayrılan taraflarını göstermeye çalışacağız. Bu konuyu işlerken önce müellifin kimliği, ilmî seviyesi ve kitabının hakkında söylenenleri özetliyecek, sonra da Buharî ve Müslim'den ayrılan taraflarını göstereceğiz. "

Cell Apoptotic Signalling Pathways

Apoptosis is the regulated form of cell death. It is a complex process defined by a set of characteristic morphological and biochemical features that involves the active participation of affected cells in a self-destruction cascade. This programmed cell death plays a critical role in physiological functions such as cell deletion during embryonic development, balancing cell number in continuously renewing tissues and immune system development. Additionally, a dysregulation of apoptosis is underlying in numerous pathological situations such as Parkinson, Alzheimer's disease and cancer. A number of studies have pointed out an association between consumption of fruits and vegetables, and certain beverages such as tea and wine, which are rich in polyphenols, with reduced risk of chronic diseases, including cancer. Apoptosis is also the regulatory mechanism involved in the removal of unnecessary cells during development and in tissue homeostasis in a wide range of organisms from insects to mammals. This book focuses on cell apoptotic signalling pathways.

Plasticity of monocytes/macrophages: phenotypic changes during disease progression

Macrophage is a key component of innate immunity that exhibit extensive plasticity and heterogeneity. They are present in virtually every organ of the body and can be replenished by circulating monocytes following insults. Originally macrophages were divided into two major phenotypes: pro-inflammatory M1, which is initiated by TNF-α, INF-γ, and bacterial components such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and anti-inflammatory M2, which is activated through stimulation of IL-4, IL-10, and IL-13. However, segregation into two distinct phenotypes is a marked simplification of the in vivo reality and it is now widely accepted that macrophage phenotype is plastic and determined by highly complex micr...
