Challenge to Mars

The fourteen essays in Part I look at the interwar years, which gave rise to an array of pacifist organizations, both religious and humanist, throughout Europe and North America. Twelve essays in Part II deal with the brutal challenge to pacifist ideals posed by the Second World War and include a look at the fate of those courageous Germans who refused to fight for Hitler.

Finnish Settler Colonialism in North America

Finnish Settler Colonialism in North America reinterprets Finnish experiences in North America by connecting them to the transnational processes of settler colonial conquest, far-settlement, elimination of natives, and capture of terrestrial spaces. Rather than merely exploring whether the idea of Finns as a different kind of immigrant is a myth, this book challenges it in many ways. It offers an analysis of the ways in which this myth manifests itself, why it has been upheld to this day, and most importantly how it contributes to settler colonialism in North America and beyond. The authors in this volume apply multidisciplinary perspectives in revealing the various levels of Finnish involve...

Above the entrance to the Finnish Labour Temple, in what was once Port Arthur in northern Ontario, is the motto labor omnia vincit – “hard work conquers all.” Since 1910, these words have reflected the dedication of the Finnish community in Canada. Hard Work Conquers All is a social history of Finnish immigration and community building in Canada during the twentieth century. Each successive wave of immigration imbued the relationship between people, homeland, and host country with the politics, ideologies, and cultural expressions of its time. The story of Finns in Canada dovetails with the larger literature on Canadian immigration and enriches the history of socialism and ethnic repression in this country. Hard Work Conquers All explores the nuanced cultural identities of Finnish Canadians, their continued ties to Finland, intergenerational cultural transfer, and the community’s connections with socialism and labour movements. It offers new interpretations of the lasting influence of Finnish immigration on Canadian politics and society.

Swedish and Finnish Historiographies of the Swedish Realm, c. 1520–1809

In the early modern era, two Nordic countries that are neighbours today, Sweden and Finland, formed one realm. Yet, modern history writing has largely ignored this unity, instead developing analysis and discussion in close connection to nationalistic ideas, national politics, and processes of state-building. Historians of both countries have therefore mostly approached their common past separately and academic history in both countries has taken its own course of development, leading to different emphases. This volume explores the common early modern history between Sweden and Finland from the Middle Ages to beginning of the 19th century, and how this history has been created in professional...

Undressing the Maid

This study analyses how the imaginary Finnish Maid (Suomi-neito) was used to construct the Finnish nation at the turn of the 20th century. It focuses on gender, femininity and masculinity, sexuality and body as well as on the images of virginity, bridehood and sexual violence. The study argues that Finnish male intellectuals saw the Finnish nation as their female beloved, a potential bride, but that they did not get her and the Finnish Maid remained an eternal virgin. In addition, the Finnish Maid was seen as being raped by the Russians. The materials analysed in this study consist of caricatures, poems and national monuments.

Miekkoja on taottu auroiksi oman hengenkin uhalla. Kalevi Kalemaa (s. 1941) on tamperelainen kirjailija. Hänen runsaaseen tuotantoonsa kuuluu sekä kauno- että tietokirjallisuutta, mm. elämäkertoja, historiikkeja, runoja, näytelmiä, kuunnelmia ja satuja. Kalemaa on lisäksi toimittanut useita teoksia.
