I Am I Between Worlds and Between Shadows

During the last decade, the work of Greek-born artist Kalliopi Lemos has exposed the wounding of human dignity. In her latest exhibition, showing September 2013 in Istanbul, Lemos focuses on women's experiences and the frequent abuse of their self-respect. The exhibition consists of an installation that features seven evocative sculptures that refer to the brutal violations directly or indirectly affecting all women and short videos that contain fragmented images from the female unconscious, enhancing the metaphorical origin of the works.

Kalliopi Lemos' sculptures are an artistic memorial to a repressed history of modern Europe, which in recent years has become a fortress, sealing itself off against thousands of asylum seekers from Africa, the Near and Middle East. Between 2006 and 2009, Lemos produced these sculptures in Athens, Istanbul and Berlin, using refugees' boats as her material.

Imagining Human Rights

Why is it that human rights are considered inviolable norms of justice at local and global scales although the number of their violations has steadily increased in modern history? On the surface, this paradox seems to be reducible to a straightforward discrepancy between idealism and reality in humanitarian affairs, but Imagining Human Rights complicates the picture by offering interdisciplinary perspectives on the imaginary status of human rights. By that the contributors mean not merely subject to imagination, open to interpretation or far too abstract, but also formative of a social imaginary with emphatic identifications and shared values. From a variety of disciplinary perspectives, the...

Migration by Boat

At a time when thousands of refugees risk their lives undertaking perilous journeys by boat across the Mediterranean, this multidisciplinary volume could not be more pertinent. It offers various contemporary case studies of boat migrations undertaken by asylum seekers and refugees around the globe and shows that boats not only move people and cultural capital between places, but also fuel cultural fantasies, dreams of adventure and hope, along with fears of invasion and terrorism. The ambiguous nature of memories, media representations and popular culture productions are highlighted throughout in order to address negative stereotypes and conversely, humanize the individuals involved.
