Thai Rice
Thai rice feeds people in more than 160 countries, Another 20 million visitors from all corners of the globe travel to Thailand every year, geting to taste Thai rice, many for the very first time. For the peple of Thailand and their ethnic kin throughout Asia, the word Kao (rice) is synonymous with food, and Kin Kao translates to 'eat a meal'. This book introduces the many faceted story of Thai rice to its new and longtime fans - for those students of rice, in and outside school and university, wishing to increase their knowledge of rice, as has been described and explained by science. Attempts have been made to integrate basic understanding of rice science into the world of rice growers, traders and eaters, including the work on the local rice germplasm and its ecological and socia-economic context of students, researchers and academics at Chiang Mai University, which has contributed to the establishment of the Lanna Rice Research Centre.
Rural Life in Late Socialism
China, Laos, and Vietnam are three of a handful of late socialist countries where capitalist economics rubs up against party-state politics. In these countries, sweeping processes of change open up new vistas of opportunity and imaginaries of the future alongside much uncertainty and anxiety, especially for their large rural populations. Contributors to this edited volume demonstrate the diverse ways in which rural people build futures in this unique policy landscape and how their aspirations and desires are articulated as projects involving both citizens and the state. Global Agricultural Workers from the 17th to the 21st Century
Agricultural workers have long been underrepresented in labour history. This volume aims to change this by bringing together a collection of studies on the largest group of the global work force. The contributions cover the period from the early modern to the present – a period when the emergence and consolidation of capitalism has transformed rural areas all over the globe. Three questions have guided the approach and the structure of this volume. First, how and why have peasant families managed to survive under conditions of advancing commercialisation and industrialisation? Second, why have coercive labour relations been so persistent in the agricultural sector and third, what was the role of states in the recruitment of agricultural workers? Southeast Asia
Drawing on case studies from across Southeast Asia, this work assesses poverty and the ways in which the poor are identified and viewed. Progress and change in the rural and urban worlds are examined in detail, focusing on the strengthening rural-urban interaction as farmers make a living in the urban-industrial sector and factories relocate into industrial areas. Giving prominence to indigenous notions of development, based on Buddhism, Islam and the so-called Asian Way, the author critically assesses the conceptual foundations of the development, ideas of post developmentalism, and the miracle thesis.

Counting the Costs
Written by an international panel of specialists on Thailand who share a common concern for the environment, this volume examines the causes and consequences of environment change both in the countryside and the urban areas of the Kingdom. The papers, however, in no sense reflect a common view; the authors embrace contrasting environmental ideologies in discussing a wide range of concerns. These include the role of Buddhism and tourism in promoting sustainable development, environmental systems of thought and action, the practicalities of water pollution control in Bangkok and the Gulf of Thailand, and the changing bases of life and livelihood among the hill peoples of the North. The environment as an issue of concern is now important phase of assimilation, interpretation, prescription and action. The papers in this volume reflect this change.
