Ole Hendricks and His Tunebook

Ole Hendricks and His Tunebook

Ole Hendricks was an immigrant both representative and exceptional--a true artistic talent who nevertheless lived a familiar immigrant experience. By day, he was a farmer. But at night, his fiddle lit up dance halls, bringing together all manner of neighbors in rural Minnesota. Each tune in his repertoire of waltzes, reels, polkas, quadrilles, and more were copied neatly into his commonplace book. Such tunebooks, popular during the nineteenth century, rarely survive and are often overlooked by folk scholars in favor of commercially produced recordings, published sheet music, or oral tradition. Based on extensive historical and genealogical research, Amy Shaw presents a grounded picture of a musician, his family, and his community in the Upper Midwest, revealing much about music and dance in the area. This notable contribution to regional music and folklore includes more than one hundred of Ole's dance tunes, transcribed into modern musical notation for the first time. Ole Hendricks and His Tunebook will be valuable to readers and scholars interested in ethnomusicology and the Norwegian American immigrant experience.

Persecution, Collaboration, Resistance

When Germany invaded Norway on 9 April 1940, the long lasting bilateral relations changed fundamentally. Immediately, the administration of the ‘Reichskommissariat Norwegen’ responsible for culture and therein music together with the Norwegian puppet regime’s department for culture implemented the adaption to the new, official National Socialist guidelines. The diversity of music in Norway during the occupation is presented in this book by Norwegian and German authors, confronting research on collaboration, persecution, and resistance for the first time as an international endeavour. The different essays illustrate not only examples of exile and persecution and ask for the consequences...

Scandinavian Song

Scandinavian art songs are a unique expression of the cultures of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Although these three countries are distinct from one another, their languages and cultures share many similarities. Common themes found in art and literature include a love of nature, especially of the sea, feelings of longing and melancholy, the contrast between light and dark, the extremes of the northern climate, and lively folk traditions. These shared sensibilities are reflected and expressed in a tangible way through music. Scandinavian art song has faced several challenges over the years in North America (even in the American Midwest, where descendants of Scandinavian immigrants are concentr...

Historical Studies on Folk and Traditional Music

Since the 1960s historical studies of European folk and traditional music have had a centre in the 'Study Group on Historical Sources of Folk Music' within the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM). The new political situation in Europe in the 1990s has given this work topical interest, since folk and traditional music is often an important component in ethnic or even national identity. The Study Group held its eleventh conference in Copenhagen at the Danish Folklore archives (Dansk Folkemindesamling) from 24 to 28 April 1995. The local organisers of the meeting were Jens Henrik Koudal and Svend Nielsen. Around 30 participants from 15 countries (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croat...
