Diese neue Tucholsky-Monographie in der bekannten Reihe tritt an die Stelle der von K.-P. Schulz 1959 veröffentlichten Lebensgeschichte (BA 143, 139; 4/81, 235). Das war überfällig, obwohl Schulz das Verdienst zukommt, die "1. verläßliche Lebensdarstellung" (so s. Z.J. Eyssen) verfaßt zu haben. Ein besserer Autor als Hepp konnte für die neue Monographie nicht gefunden werden: Hepp ist nicht nur Vorsitzender der Tucholsky-Gesellschaft und Autor einer umfangreichen, kritischen "biographischen Annäherung" an Tucho (BA 7/93), er konnte auch noch gesperrte Briefe und Tagebücher der Tucholsky-Gattin Mary einsehen und als Mitherausgeber der großen Werkausgabe (zuletzt BA 9: BA 7/98) die Fülle neu zugänglicher Materialien verarbeiten. Das lebendige, vor den Zeithintergrund gestellte Lebensbild des Publizisten sollte wegen der übersichtlichen Zugänglichkeit vor M. Hepps umfangreicher Biographie (s.o.) und vor H.
