Readying Cavalli's Operas for the Stage
After more than three centuries of silence, the voice of Francesco Cavalli is being heard loud and clear on the operatic stages of the world. The coincidence of productions at La Scala (Milan) and Covent Garden (London) in the same month (September 2008) of two different operas signals a new stage in the recovery of these extraordinary works, confined until now to special venues committed to 'early music'-opera festivals, conservatory, and university productions. l Seminario del dottorato in Lingue e culture del Mediterraneo -- Firenze 21-23 giugno 2010 -- si proponeva di riflettere, nella scia di precedenti filoni di indagine (si veda Giudizi e pregiudizi, Alinea 2010), sulle 'leyendas negras' che si aggirano per l'Europa: le storie che sono inventate per squalificare l'altro, per bandirlo dal nostro orizzonte, per proiettare le nostre paure fuori di noi, attribuendole a un nemico che diventa così una vittima sacrificale. Il percorso si è mosso tra Spagna, Francia, Prussia, Germania, Italia, con ovvi sondaggi americani; si è cercato di seguire un filo cronologico, dopo tre interventi iniziali che problematizzano le linee di analisi.
