Die 8. Fachtagung für Hochschuldidaktik der Informatik (HDI) fand im September 2018 zusammen mit der Deutschen E-Learning Fachtagung Informatik (DeLFI) unter dem gemeinsamen Motto „Digitalisierungswahnsinn? - Wege der Bildungstransformationen“ in Frankfurt statt. Dabei widmet sich die HDI allen Fragen der informatischen Bildung im Hochschulbereich. Schwerpunkte bildeten in diesem Jahr u. a.: - Analyse der Inhalte und anzustrebenden Kompetenzen in Informatikveranstaltungen - Programmieren lernen &Einstieg in Softwareentwicklung - Spezialthemen: Data Science, Theoretische Informatik und Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten Die Fachtagung widmet sich ausgewählten Fragestellungen dieser Themenkomplexe, die durch Vorträge ausgewiesener Experten und durch eingereichte Beiträge intensiv behandelt werden.
The Future Will Tell
Countess Maria Tarnowska was larger than life and unafraid to speak her mind. In spite of her many personal losses, she gave unstintingly of herself to her beloved Poland, becoming a symbol of strength for others. The author belonged to the Polish aristocracy and was the wife of a diplomat, a role that opened her world to rulers and prominent politicians. As she recounts poignant episodes in her life, the personal and the historic become intertwined. In her role as second-in-command of the Polish Red Cross, and as a member of the Resistance during WWII, the reader immediately understands that hers was not a life of idleness but one of extraordinary courage and sublime sacrifice. Maria harshly condemns the Russian treachery in restricting the promised assistance of the Red Army during the Warsaw Uprising. Life, as hellish as it was during Nazism, becomes ludicrously unbearable under the crude Communist regime. Coming from one who was twice imprisoned, Maria Tarnowska's memoir is a resounding tribute to the concept of freedom and democracy. A must-read ...

The End of the Habsburgs
In 1806, the Holy Roman Empire ceased to exist when Francis II became Emperor of Austria. 112 years later, the Habsburg empire collapsed after the First World War after surviving many tribulations. During the year of revolutions in 1848 the much-loved but incompetent Emperor Ferdinand had abdicated in favour of his young nephew Francis Joseph. His long reign was marked by defeat in several wars, family tragedies and scandals including the execution of his brother Maximilian, Emperor of Mexico, the suicide of his son Crown Prince Rudolf, and the assassinations of his wife Empress Elizabeth, and nephew Francis Ferdinand. He was succeeded in 1916 by the succession of his great-nephew Charles, who abdicated in 1918 and died after two unsuccessful attempts to regain the throne of Hungary, but his eldest son Otto remained head of the family and Member of the European Parliament for twenty years. This book looks at the final chapter of the Habsburgs, from the Napoleonic era to the age of the dictators and post-war Europe.
Energy-Efficient VCSELs for Optical Interconnects
This dissertation provides the first systematic analysis of the dynamic energy efficiency of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) for optical interconnects, a key technology to address the pressing ecological and economic issues of the exponentially growing energy consumption in data centers. Energy-efficient data communication is one of the most important fields in “Green Photonics” enabling higher bit rates at significantly reduced energy consumption per bit. In this thesis the static and dynamic properties of GaAs-based oxide-confined VCSELs emitting at 850 nm and 980 nm are analyzed and general rules for achieving energy-efficient data transmission using VCSELs at any wavelength are derived. These rules are verified in data transmission experiments leading to record energy-efficient data transmission across a wide range of multimode optical fiber distances and at high temperatures up to 85°C. Important trade-offs between energy efficiency, temperature stability, modulation bandwidth, low current-density operation and other VCSEL properties are revealed and discussed.
