Over the years, Kati Heck (b. 1979) has developed a highly personal vision of the everyday. Her works resemble fictitious projections from her own universe, and she uses the diversity that is inherent in painting to create a link with the potential of the imagination. Heck is principally known as a painter, but also seeks expression in other media such as photography, sculpture and performances. Her colourful oeuvre is consistently characterised by irony, drama and a highly original sense of the grotesque.00'Hauruck', which is being published to accompany Heck?s solo show in Kunstmuseum Den Haag, contains some 75 works that were created between 2013 and 2020, as well as a graphic short story written specially for this book.00With a textual contribution from Ben Eastham, editor-in-chief of art-agenda. 00Exhibition: Kunstmuseum Den Haag, The Hague, The Netherlands (06.06.-08.11.2020).

Kati Heck?s masterful virtuosity is unmistakable. She portrays her figures in a photo-realistic manner with great attention to every detail. She combines that precision with abstractions and parts that are applied almost sculpturally on canvas. Most of her subjects are derived from her immediate surroundings, making most her works populated by her friends, neighbors and pets. Her works reminds us of the bars, dancers and actors of Otto Dix and George Grosz, but also refer to Jean-Michael Basquiat and the Old Masters. With her works, Heck synthesizes different styles, combining elements from expressionism and surrealism with social realism.00Exhibition: Tim van Laere Gallery, Antwerp, Belgium (23.05.-06.07.2019).

In a broad sense, German-born artist Kati Heck’s body of work questions the art of painting. While referencing the history of the portrait, she simultaneously engages in breaking down bodily forms, often leaving unfinished aspects, which in turn offer fertile ground for imagination. This mixture of reality and the surreal takes shape in Heck’s nonsensical, absurdist and grotesque themes, and in the obscene or provocative gestures and poses found in her work. Published in conjunction with a solo exhibition at CAC Málaga, this catalogue includes numerous paintings, sculptures and installations, texts by Jan Hoet and Fernando Francés and a conversation between Heck and Luc Tuymans. 0Exhibition: CAC Málaga, Spain (13.12.2013-16.03.2014).
