Can Peace Research Make Peace?

This book is about the process and, more generally, about the opportunities that peace research and the teaching of conflict resolution can offer academic diplomacy. As such the book is both an empirical and a theoretical project. While it aims at being the most comprehensive analysis of the conflict in West Kalimantan, it also launches a new theoretical approach, neo-pragmatism, and offers lessons for the prevention of conflicts elsewhere. While being based on the classical pragmatist theories of truth and explanation, the approach developed in this book incorporates the complications to social science theory caused by the 'discovery' of socially constructed realities, and concepts such as speech acts. Yet, instead of just theorizing speech acts and social constructs, the theoretical mission is to offer pragmatic, detailed, concrete prescriptions of what to do to deconstruct realities that threaten peace by the means available for research and scholars of peace.

Kirjassa kerrotaan Non Fighting Generation ry:n jo 18 vuoden ajan toteuttamasta valtakunnallisesta väkivallattomuustoiminnasta nuorten parissa. Vaikka järjestön toiminta on melko laajalti tunnettua ja yleisesti erittäin menestykselliseksi tunnustettua, on paikallaan luoda katsaus niihin tuloksiin, vaikutuksiin ja vaikuttavuuteen, joita toiminnalla on tähän asti saatu aikaiseksi. Kirjaan on koottu monipuolinen kirjo järjestön kasvattajien kohtaamisista nuorten kanssa. Tuhansien kohtaamisten joukosta on poimittu joitakin yksittäisiä kasvattajien mieliin painuneita esimerkkejä, joissa on tapahtunut kyseisen nuoren käytännön elämän kannalta merkityksellistä. Monista esimerkeistÃ...

Edhina Ekogidho – Names as Links

What are the most popular names of the Ambo people in Namibia? Why do so many Ambos have Finnish first names? What do the African names of these people mean? Why is the namesake so important in Ambo culture? How did the long independence struggle affect personal naming, and what are the latest name-giving trends in Namibia? This study analyses the changes in the personal naming system of the Ambo people in Namibia over the last 120 years, starting from the year 1883 when the first Ambos received biblical and European names at baptism. The central factors in this process were the German and South African colonisation and European missionary work on the one hand, and the rise of African nationalism on the other hand. Eventually, this clash between African and European naming practices led to a new and dynamic naming system which includes elements of both African and European origin.
