"Keratinocytes, as the main cellular component of the organism/environment interface, perform a vast range of functions in protection, secretion, sensation and self-repair by virtue of their great plasticity in form and development. Indeed recent medical advances in laboratory culture of these cells for use as skin grafts in cases of severe burns or ulceration owe much of their success to this very plasticity. Drawing upon a wide range of international expertise the various interconnected aspects of cell structure, composition and function are laid out in this volume, providing a comprehensive dossier of the keratinocyte and its biological significance."--Pub. desc.

Molecular Biology of the Skin

Molecular Biology of the Skin: The Keratinocyte comprehensively reviews the major aspects of keratinocyte and epidermal differentiation, physiology, and pathology, primarily focusing on the molecular aspects. This exciting new resource discusses keratin genes, retinoic acid, and the use of transgenic animals in the study of dermatological pathology. The volume also highlights areas of genetic disease, new animal models to help in understanding dermatological disorders, and gene therapy using skin as a target. W.W. Franke, a pioneer in the study of the molecular biology of keratins, has written the foreword for the book. Molecular Biology of the Skin: The Keratinocyte is intended for use by d...

Keratinocyte Biology

Keratinocytes have various functions to maintain epidermal homeostasis. Many inflammatory skin diseases can develop due to suppressed or defective anti-inflammatory properties of keratinocytes. This book discusses the structural, biological, and molecular aspects of keratinocytes. Chapters discuss keratins and attachment molecules and their importance in maintaining epidermal homeostasis, skin diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, and aging and skin regeneration.

Keratinocytes

The human skin is constantly exposed to a large number of external pathogens, due to daily contact with the environment. The observation that extensive skin infections are relatively rare suggests the presence of an efficient host defence system at the skin surface. Recent findings indicate the importance of keratinocytes as effectors of innate immunity, but also as regulators of acquired immune responses, inflammation and wound repair. This book considers the current findings regarding the role of keratinocytes in the epidermis with special interest to mechanisms involved in host defence. Finally, the clinical relevance of the functions of keratinocytes in the innate immunity is also discussed.

Epidermal Cells

A collection of cutting-edge methods to analyze and manipulate epidermal cellprecursors and mature epidermal cells. These protocols cover different methods and models for culturing epidermal cells, for enriching very early epidermal progenitors, and for studying epidermal cell commitment and differentiation both in vitro and in vivo. Topics of special interest include the derivation, characterization, and utility of epidermal stem cells, mature epidermal cells and their characterization, and applications in regenerative medicine. These readily reproducible techniques broaden our understanding of the biology of epidermal cells and of their utility in normal tissue homeostasis and regenerative medicine applications.
