Why We Fail

Just as pilots and doctors improve by studying crash reports and postmortems, experience designers can improve by learning how customer experience failures cause products to fail in the marketplace. Rather than proselytizing a particular approach to design, Why We Fail holistically explores what teams actually built, why the products failed, and how we can learn from the past to avoid failure ourselves.

Providing insight on how to be a successful and strategic designer, David Holston answers many of the questions plaguing the profession today, including how to boost efficiency and enhance creativity. The design profession has been asking itself some important questions lately: How do designers deal with the increasing complexity of design problems? What skills do designers need to be competitive in the future? How do designers become co-creators with clients and audiences? How do designers prove their value to business? Designers are looking for ways to stay competitive in the conceptual economy and address the increasing complexity of design problems. By adopting a process that considers collaboration, context and accountability, designers move from 'makers of things' to 'design strategists.' The Strategic Designer shows designers how to build strong client relationships, elevate their standing with clients, increase project success rates, boost efficiency, and enhance their creativity.

An Unseen Unheard Minority

An Unseen Unheard Minority

Higher education hails Asian American students as model minorities who face no educational barriers given their purported cultural values of hard work and political passivity. Described as “over-represented,” Asian Americans have been overlooked in discussions about diversity; however, racial hostility continues to affect Asian American students, and they have actively challenged their invisibility in minority student discussions. This study details the history of Asian American student activism at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, as students rejected the university’s definition of minority student needs that relied on a model minority myth, measures of under-representation, and a Black-White racial model, concepts that made them an “unseen unheard minority.” This activism led to the creation on campus of one of the largest Asian American Studies programs and Asian American cultural centers in the Midwest. Their histories reveal the limitations of understanding minority student needs solely along measures of under-representation and the realities of race for Asian American college students.

A Pilgrim in Chinese Culture

This engaging book on Chinese religion and culture by Judith Berling has been welcomed by longtime scholars of the same as a vital and fresh perspective. 'A Pilgrim in Chinese Culture' is a story of faith meeting faith that will enrich wisdom-seekers as well as provide a tool to introduce students to cross-cultural and interfaith issues. Berling tells how she became immersed in the issues of religious diversity, of her experiences living with religious neighbors, and of discovering how different from her own Midwestern Protestant milieu is the world of Chinese religion and culture. In China, one can be Buddhist, Confucianist, Taoist, and animist at a single moment. Exploring how this inclusivity can be achieved infuses 'A Pilgrim in Chinese Culture'. The multiplicity of deities, the notion of Truth as having many embodiments, even patterns of hospitality - Berling examines how these key aspects of Chinese culture shape and inform religion in China. Through the tales it tells, 'A Pilgrim in Chinese Culture' offers readers insights that no textbook can match, bringing home what religious diversity means in surprising and illuminating ways.
