'Medics' takes a look at the role men played in the care of the sick and wounded during World War One. There is a certain perception, and certainly if one looks at the so-called docudramas related to the injured servicemen during World War One, it would appear that men played no role in the sick and injured men's care. It would be very easy to get the impression that all the care was given by the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service. This is not the case; the care of the sick and wounded actually started in no man's land where they were cared for by the regimental stretcher-bearers and the RAMC orderlies all the way down the line to the Casualty Clearing Stations and even in the General Hospitals. Throughout the text we follow the journey of the wounded from no man's land, down the evacuation chain to the general hospital in England and the colonies, and illustrate the role that the male caregivers undertook in the care of the wounded.
Nursing until the 1960s and 1970s was seen as a female profession; it is only in recent years that men, in any number, have entered this perceived female bastion. It is generally thought, or assumed, that it has always been women who have been the only nurses through the centuries. However, with even the most cursory glance at the literature available, or even on the Internet, it is soon realised that this is not the case. It is impossible to talk about, or discuss, trained nurses per se when there was no actual recognised training available in any shape or form. Again, it is a general assumption that historically the only trained nurses were female. This certainly was not the case but nursing was seen, up to quite recently, as a job for women mainly because of the social and cultural norms.
On the peripheries of UK poetry culture during his lifetime, W. S. Graham is now recognized one of the great poets of the twentieth century. In the first concerted study of Graham's poetics in a generation, David Nowell Smith argues that Graham is exemplary for the poetics of the mid-century: his extension of modernist explorations of rhythm and diction; his interweaving of linguistic and geographic places; his dialogue with the plastic arts; and the tensions that run through his work, between philosophical seriousness and play, solitude and sociality, regionalism and cosmopolitanism, the heft and evanescence of poetry's medium. Drawing on newly unearthed archival materials, Nowell Smith orients Graham's poetics around the question of the 'art object'. Graham sought to craft his poems into honed, finished 'objects'; yet he was also aware that the poem's 'finished object' is never wholly finished. Graham's work thus facilitates a broader reflection on language as a medium for art-making.
The fragmentary plays of Euripides are a body of texts still regularly increasing in number and extent. They are of very great interest in themselves, apart from the significant aid they give to the fuller appreciation of the surviving complete plays. This two-volume edition brings together for the first time for English readers the more substantial and important of the plays, about fifteen in all. Each play is introduced by a summary bibliography and an appreciative essay which analyses the mythic background and plot: reconstructs the play as far as the fragmentary text and secondary evidence allow; and discusses themes, characterisation, staging, date, reflections of the story in art and other dramatisations. For each play the fragmentary texts are presented as conveniently and succinctly as possible, together with a brief critical apparatus of sources and readings. An English translation stands on the facing page. The text and translation of each play are followed by a short, primarily interpretative commentary. The Posthomerica of Quintus of Smyrna is the only surviving Greek epic that gives a full narrative of the Trojan War between the Iliad and the Odyssey. Scholars for centuries have regarded fakes and forgeries chiefly as an opportunity for exposing and denouncing deceit, rather than appreciating the creative activity necessary for such textual imposture. But should we not be more curious about what is spurious? Many of these long-neglected texts merit serious reappraisal, when considered as artifacts with a value beyond mere authenticity. We do not have to be fooled by a forgery to find it fascinating, when even the intention to deceive can remind us how easy it is to form beliefs about texts.
