Joel B. Miller was born in 1811 near Springs, Pennsylvania. He married Catherine Brenneman (181301870), daughter of Daniel Brenneman and Maria Bender. They had eleven children. He died in 1885. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Pennsylvania.
Mothering Mennonite marks the first scholarly attempt to incorporate religious groundings in interpretations of motherhood. For decades, the field of Mennonite literature has been dominated by the question of Mennonite identity. Johann Mathias Hütwohl (1711-1776) was born in Steeg, Germany, the son of John Georg Hütwohl. In 1744 he married Anna Christina and in 1748 they, along with two daughters, sailed for America. Anna Christina and the daughters died at sea. Johann arrived in Philadelphia and settled in the Conestoga valley. In 1765 he married a Miss Haas, and they became the parents of six children. Descendants and relatives lived in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida, and elsewhere in the United States, and throughout Canada.
Mennonite literature has long been viewed as an expression of community identity.
