Dynamics and Control of Structures

A text/reference on analysis of structures that deform in use. Presents a new, integrated approach to analytical dynamics, structural dynamics and control theory and goes beyond classical dynamics of rigid bodies to incorporate analysis of flexibility of structures. Includes real-world examples of applications such as robotics, precision machinery and aircraft structures.

This volume provides an introduction to and overview of the emerging field of interconnected networks which include multilayer or multiplex networks, as well as networks of networks. Such networks present structural and dynamical features quite different from those observed in isolated networks. The presence of links between different networks or layers of a network typically alters the way such interconnected networks behave – understanding the role of interconnecting links is therefore a crucial step towards a more accurate description of real-world systems. While examples of such dissimilar properties are becoming more abundant – for example regarding diffusion, robustness and competition – the root of such differences remains to be elucidated. Each chapter in this topical collection is self-contained and can be read on its own, thus making it also suitable as reference for experienced researchers wishing to focus on a particular topic.

Nonlinear Control Design presents a self-contained introduction to nonlinear feedback control design for continuous time, finite-dimensional uncertain systems. It deals with nonlinear systems affected by uncertainties such as unknown constant parameters, time-varying disturbances, and uncertain nonlinearities. Both state feedback and output feedback are addressed. Differential geometric techniques are used to identify classes of nonlinear systems considered and to design feedback algorithms. Adaptive versions of these controls are developed in the presence of unknown parameters while robust versions are designed in the presence of time-varying disturbances. These control algorithms are applied to significant physical control problems from electric motor drives, robotics, aerospace, power systems and are illustrated through worked examples. The text is illustrated throughout with over 100 exercises, more than 75 worked examples and 12 physical examples.

Flexible Robot Dynamics and Controls

This book is the result of over ten (10) years of research and development in flexible robots and structures at Sandia National Laboratories. The authors de cided to collect this wealth of knowledge into a set of viewgraphs in order to teach a graduate class in Flexible Robot Dynamics and Controls within the Mechanical En gineering Department at the University of New Mexico (UNM). These viewgraphs, encouragement from several students, and many late nights have produced a book that should provide an upper-level undergraduate and graduate textbook and a reference for experienced professionals. The content of this book spans several disciplines including structural dynam ics, system identificat...

Beyond the hype about dot-coms, WAP phones and dot-com entrepreneurs, what impacts will e-commerce have on society? How will it affect jobs and local communities? What will it mean for the environment - for energy use, transport and the future shape of our cities? How can we ensure that everyone enjoys the benefits of the new digital technologies? This is a groundbreaking exploration of the social and environmental impacts and opportunities of the new economy. It brings together the leading thinkers and visionaries from the worlds of policy, business and academia in an insightful, vigorous and at times controversial examination of the impact e-commerce will have on the way we live and work, and on the environment on which we all depend.

I3E 2001 is the first in a series of conferences on e-commerce, e-business, and- government organised by the three IFIP committees TC6, TC8, and TC11. It provides a forum, where users, engineers, and scientists from academia, industry, and government can present their latest findings in e-commerce, e-business, and- government applications and the underlying technology to support those applications. The conference comprises a main track and mini tracks dedicated to special topics. The papers presented in the main track were rigorously refereed and selected by the International Programme Committee of the conference. Thematically they were grouped in the following sessions: – Sessions on secu...
