Nordic Alternative Protein Potentials
Within agri- and aquaculture, a specific bioeconomy challenge – and a bioeconomy opportunity – has been identified concerning sustainable protein supply for livestock production and fish farming. Today, imported soy products are by far the most important protein source however several alternative ways of producing protein rich feed has been identified using regional resources. Production of legumes, pulses and grass can be expanded. Alternative protein rich sources include single cell protein (bacteria/fungi), macroalgae (seaweed), mussels and insects. Local protein production has a number of benefits in the form of generation of local jobs, reduction in the import of nutrients and in general boosting the bioeconomy. Many of the alternative ways of producing protein rich feed are still under development, this report therefor also includes recommendations concerning how to proceed.

This volume contains abstracts and papers presented at the second Danish Sahel Workshop helld at Sandbjerg Manor in 1990. The papers cover natural and social sciences, such as improved utilisation of tree legumes, degradations and desertification, afforestation techniques and problems, ecological monitoring and remote sensing techniques, animal counting in Senegal, the political economy of agricultural development in Burkina Faso, research and development in the Red Sea area, the economic potential of the semi-arid areas, as well as accounts of the research sponsored by DANIDA, integrated projects in Mali and Senegal and the Danish activities with control of parasitic diseases in Africa.

In 2014 NCM initiated a new project: “Test centers for green energy solutions – Biorefineries and Business needs” to strengthen Nordic bioeconomy by identifying potentials, obstacles, needs and opportunities. The Nordic bioeconomy has a unique profile: Upgrade of many types of residues also to higher value products; good collaboration between private and public sector; R&D efforts in all Nordic countries. However, shortcomings were also identified: few activities across Nordic countries beyond designated Nordic programs; too few upscaling facilities; need for improved framework conditions (within regulatory and market stimulus) for biobased products.
