Transgenic Crop Plants

Development of transgenic crop plants, their utilization for improved agriculture, health, ecology and environment and their socio-political impacts are currently important fields in education, research and industries and also of interest to policy makers, social activists and regulatory and funding agencies. This work prepared with a class-room approach on this multidisciplinary subject will fill an existing gap and meet the requirements of such a broad section of readers. Volume 2 with 13 chapters contributed by 41 eminent scientists from nine countries deliberates on the utilization of transgenic crops for resistance to herbicides, biotic stress and abiotic stress, manipulation of developmental traits, production of biofuel, biopharmaceuticals and algal bioproducts, amelioration of ecology and environment and fostering functional genomics as well as on regulations and steps for commercialization, patent and IPR issues, and compliance to concerns and compulsions of utilizing transgenic plants.

This paper discusses the pricing of CDOs in a Markov chain framework. We show that in general the values of the legs satisfy systems of partial differential equations. In the special case of constant default intensities, one only needs to solve a system of ordinary differential equations, the so-called Kolmogorov differential equations.

On 5 July 2023, the European Commission issued a proposal for the regulation that intends to relax the requirements for marketing authorisation of plants obtained by certain new genomic techniques (NGTs) in the EU. While NGTs are expected to become more appealing to breeders and farmers, the complexity of the intellectual property (IP) landscape surrounding such techniques and resulting products can have a discouraging effect on innovation. In view of numerous concerns related to IP protection for NGTs and NGT-derived plants, the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition has published a Position Statement with a set of policy recommendations that can facilitate access to and utilisation of IP-protected NGTs in the breeding sector.

Recent allegations from participants of the FIA Formula One World Championship (F1) suggest that its authorities violate European competition law in two ways. First, they allegedly abuse market power by forcing unfavorable contracts on media revenue allocation upon teams as a whole and on smaller teams in particular (vertical allocation of media revenue). Second, they allegedly form a cartel with selected teams to the detriment of smaller teams by providing unjustified extra payments to these teams (horizontal allocation of media revenues). In doing so, the cartel members allegedly secure supracompetitive rents from the authorities and cement an unfair competitive advantage over the outsider...

Macroeconomic Forecasting in the Era of Big Data

This book surveys big data tools used in macroeconomic forecasting and addresses related econometric issues, including how to capture dynamic relationships among variables; how to select parsimonious models; how to deal with model uncertainty, instability, non-stationarity, and mixed frequency data; and how to evaluate forecasts, among others. Each chapter is self-contained with references, and provides solid background information, while also reviewing the latest advances in the field. Accordingly, the book offers a valuable resource for researchers, professional forecasters, and students of quantitative economics.

Plant Biotechnology

Written in easy to follow language, the book presents cutting-edge agriculturally relevant plant biotechnologies and applications in a manner that is accessible to all. This book updates and introduces the scope and method of plant biotechnologies and molecular breeding within the context of environmental analysis and assessment, a diminishing supply of productive arable land, scarce water resources and climate change. New plant breeding techniques including CRISPR-cas system are now tools to meet these challenges both in developed countries and in developing countries. Ethical issues, intellectual property rights, regulation policies in various countries related to agricultural biotechnology are examined. The rapid developments in plant biotechnology are explained to a large audience with relevant examples. New varieties of crops can be adapted to new climatic conditions in order to reduce pest-associated losses and the adverse abiotic effects

The ongoing debate regarding the significance of religion and language on economic performance (GDP) is inconclusive and non-exhaustive. We present a non-parametric partial least square - structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) analysis of within-country diversity and GDP. With a sample of 46 countries for the period 2004-2019, we provide evidence on (1) within-country diversity and GDP, (2) the direct and indirect effect of financial technology on GDP, and (3) the existence of a non-linear relationship between financial development (FINDX) and GDP. Our evidence shows that religious (linguistic) diversity increases (decreases) GDP. We also show that ATM per 100,000 adults (ATM_ADUL) intensifies the positive (negative) effect of religious (linguistic) diversity on GDP. Moreover, our evidence suggests that ATM_ADUL has a non-linear effect on FINDX. Additional evidence shows that FINDX also has a non-linear effect on GDP. Taken together, our findings show that ATM_ADUL moderates the effect of within-country diversity and has both direct and indirect effects (through FINDX) on GDP.

A Closer Look at the Measurement of Dispositional Reasoning

Despite the growing interest in dispositional reasoning as a construct and determinant of good raters ('good judges'), its measurement still requires attention. We address two measurement issues in the present study. First, this study tests a hierarchical model as a more parsimonious account for dispositional reasoning than component- or general-factor models that were examined in earlier studies. So, this provides a more comprehensive test of the different measurement models underlying dispositional reasoning data. Second, we assess the measurement invariance of dispositional reasoning measure scores across two different populations of assessors that are often trained and used in workplace assessments, namely psychology students (N)=)161) and managers (N)=)160). Results showed that dispositional reasoning is well represented as componential in nature, with a higher-order construct underlying three lower-order components. A comparison of managers and psychology students through measurement invariance analysis showed relatively similar factor structures underlying dispositional reasoning scores across these groups, but metric invariance could be only partially established.
