Medieval manuscripts resisted obsolescence. Made by highly specialised craftspeople (scribes, illuminators, book binders) with labour-intensive processes using exclusive and sometimes exotic materials (parchment made from dozens or hundreds of skins, inks and paints made from prized minerals, animals and plants), books were expensive and built to last. This is a full-size facsimile of the magnum opus of Maria Sibylla Merian, a significant contributor to the field of entomology because of her careful observations and documentation of the metamorphosis of the butterfly. Merian, a German naturalist and scientific illustrator, was one of the foremost female scientists of the 17th century. In 1705, she published Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, for which she became famous. No more than 30 copies of this masterwork are left worldwide.
