Author and Narrator

The distinction between author and narrator is one of the cornerstones of narrative theory. In the past two decades, however, scope, implications and consequences of this distinction have become the subjects of debate. This volume offers contributions to these debates from different vantage points: literary studies, linguistics, philosophy, and media studies. It thus manifests the status of narrative theory as a transdisciplinary project.

"What happens when a physician can't simply heal himself? Does he still get to call himself doctor when he no longer sees patients? What is his place in the world? In Hilton Koppe's case, he writes an honest, vulnerable, gorgeous memoir inviting the reader into his journey from illness to health, from his family's origins fleeing Lithuania and Germany during World War II to becoming a country doctor in Australia. Though he no longer works in a clinic, Hilton continues to heal with his words. One Curious Doctor is a medical memoir with heart." Kim Suhr, author of Nothing to Lose (Cornerstone Press, 2018) and director of Red Oak Writing Welcome to One Curious Doctor. Thank you for your willing...

Counterfactual Thinking - Counterfactual Writing

Counterfactuality is currently a hotly debated topic. While for some disciplines such as linguistics, cognitive science, or psychology counterfactual scenarios have been an important object of study for quite a while, counterfactual thinking has in recent years emerged as a method of study for other disciplines, most notably the social sciences. This volume provides an overview of the current definitions and uses of the concept of counterfactuality in philosophy, historiography, political sciences, psychology, linguistics, physics, and literary studies. The individual contributions not only engage the controversies that the deployment of counterfactual thinking as a method still generates, they also highlight the concept’s potential to promote interdisciplinary exchange without neglecting the limitations and pitfalls of such a project. Moreover, the essays from literary studies, which make up about half of the volume, provide both a historical and a systematic perspective on the manifold ways in which counterfactual scenarios can be incorporated into and deployed in literary texts.

Hybrid Learning Spaces

As we have come to accept the duality of physical and virtual learning spaces as a permanent feature of our educational landscape, we begin to question its validity. Is this really a dichotomy, or is it a continuum? Should this be the primary dimension around which we cluster educational experiences - how does it intersect and interact with other axes, such as formal-informal, vocational-recreational, open-closed, teacher-student? How do we adapt, as teachers, learners, designers, policy makers, to this changing landscape? How do we shape it to offer an optimal learning experience? Such questions led us to conduct a series of academic and professional events on the theme of Hybrid Learning S...

The Use of Nuclear Weapons and the Protection of the Environment during International Armed Conflict

  • Categories: Law

In 1996, the International Court of Justice delivered an Advisory Opinion on the legality of the use of nuclear weapons in which the Court stated that "while the existing international law relating to the protection and safeguarding of the environment does not specifically prohibit the use of nuclear weapons it indicates important environmental factors that are properly to be taken into account in the context of the implementation of the principles and rules of the law applicable in armed conflict." The present work analyses this conclusion, focusing on the question whether or not the use of nuclear weapons during international armed conflict would violate existing norms of public internatio...

Metabolic Control in Diabetes Mellitus Beta Adrenoceptor Blocking Drugs NMR Analysis of Cancer Cells Immunoassay in the Clinical Laboratory Cyclosporine

The close association between blood glucose control and the well-being of the patient, as well as the risk for the development of the "late" complications of 3 diabetes, make it necessary to attain near normalisation of blood glucosel- ). Signifi cant progress has been made in this direction in the last few years because of the advancement of analytical techniques for the monitoring of both metabolic status and the functional state of the pancreas and the kidneys, organs involved in the disease process. The respective methodologies are the test strips for self-monitoring of glucose in blood and urine, the measurement of the nonenzymatic glycosylation of hemoglobin and serum proteins, the C-p...
