Hailed by The New York Times as probably the most important economist in the world , Jeffrey Sachs is internationally renowned for his work around the globe advising economies in crisis. Now he draws on all he has learned from twenty-five years of work to offer a uniquely informed vision of the keys to economic success in the world today and the steps that are necessary to achieve prosperity for all. Marrying vivid, passionate storytelling with profound, rigorous analysis, Jeffrey Sachs explains why, over the past two hundred years, wealth has diverged across the planet and why the poorest nations have so far been unable to improve their lot. He explains how to arrive at an in-depth diagnosi...

Communism and the Emergence of Democracy

Communism and the Emergence of Democracy

Before democracy becomes an institutionalised form of political authority, the rupture with authoritarian forms of power causes deep uncertainty about power and outcomes. This book connects the study of democratisation in eastern Europe and Russia to the emergence and crisis of communism. Wydra argues that the communist past is not simply a legacy but needs to be seen as a social organism in gestation, where critical events produce new expectations, memories and symbols that influence meanings of democracy. By examining a series of pivotal historical events, he shows that democratisation is not just a matter of institutional design, but rather a matter of consciousness and leadership under conditions of extreme and traumatic incivility. Rather than adopting the opposition between non-democratic and democratic, Wydra argues that the communist experience must be central to the study of the emergence and nature of democracy in (post-) communist countries.

The book is intended for all those who are interested in application problems related to dynamical systems. It provides an overview of recent findings on dynamical systems in the broadest sense. Divided into 46 contributed chapters, it addresses a diverse range of problems. The issues discussed include: Finite Element Analysis of optomechatronic choppers with rotational shafts; computational based constrained dynamics generation for a model of a crane with compliant support; model of a kinetic energy recuperation system for city buses; energy accumulation in mechanical resonance; hysteretic properties of shell dampers; modeling a water hammer with quasi-steady and unsteady friction in viscoelastic conduits; application of time-frequency methods for the assessment of gas metal arc welding conditions; non-linear modeling of the human body’s dynamic load; experimental evaluation of mathematical and artificial neural network modeling for energy storage systems; interaction of bridge cables and wake in vortex-induced vibrations; and the Sommerfeld effect in a single DOF spring-mass-damper system with non-ideal excitation.
