Stress and Anxiety

The current volume of the Stress and Anxiety series presents 27 peer-reviewed chapters that thematically span four general areas of stressful life events, anxiety, and coping research. The first collection of papers concerns coping with economic burdens, natural disasters, and human-induced catastrophes and considers psychological resources which may serve as protective factors. Next are review and empirical investigations that examine a variety of manifestations of emotional and psychological well-being, evaluations of treatment programs, as well as scale validation studies. Part three features manuscripts addressing both psychological benefits and liabilities of occupational demands with a focus on exploration of positive work context for both the individual and the workplace. Chapters in the final part of the volume focus on developmental markers and coping efforts of children and adolescents with foci on environmental influences and cross-cultural comparisons.

Stress and Anxiety - Contributions of the STAR Award Winners

This book celebrates the 40th anniversary of the STAR Society - the enduring legacy of our esteemed colleagues Charles Spielberger, Henk Van Der Ploeg, and Ralf Schwarzer who conceptualised the idea for a society focused on the measure of stress. Since that time, the focus has moved on from measurement alone, to include stress, coping and resilience: theory, research, and practice. Exactly 20 years after its inception, we initiated the annual STAR Lifetime Career Award to members with a long and distinguished history of scientific contributions in the field of stress, anxiety and coping. Around the same time, the STAR Early Career Award was established to honour researchers achievements in t...

Sustaining Musical Instruments / Food and Instrumental Music

This 7th volume of SIMP is dedicated to two large themes that were discussed in the last Study Group Symposium held online and arranged by the Music Faculty of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts, Colombo, Sri Lanka, in March 2021: ``Re-invention and Sustainability of Musical Instruments'' and ``Instrumental Music and Food''. Thirteen contributions were compiled in this volume relating to the first theme, while seven contributions were chosen to represent the second. The first part of the contributions illustrates that musical instruments have a long and regionally intertwined history. Often it is hard to say who invented a specific type first as well as to answer if musical instruments were used symbolically or supported in any way supported regional cultural aspects, or what feature of musical instruments had the strongest impact on local developments. The last seven contributions deal with various phenomena such as banquet music, ritual music and food offerings, instrumental ambience music, and festivals.

"The New Series of the ICTM Study Group Journal STUDIA INSTURMENTORUM MUSICAE POPULARIS starts with a broad overview on the topics “Percussion” and “Migration of Musical Instruments”, an outcome of the 17th Meeting of the Study Group on Folk Musical Instruments, held in Erkner near Berlin from April 1-4, 2009. 25 scholars from 15 countries contributed articles to the volume, which appear in their alphabetical order due to the fact that clear borders cannot and should not be delineated. Moreover, the editors leave it to the readers' community to discuss hierarchies regarding their importance or their qualitative refinement for discussion and further improvements are the main aim of th...

The Norman Admiralty

What was the real power of the Norman admirals? In what way did they practise their authority? This study on the Norman admiralty in Sicily focuses on the development of this office as it changes from an office to a title with increasing and increadible prestige in the years from the second half of the 11th century to the end of the 12th century. The admiral was an officer who worked in the royal palace for the royal authority as prime minister and was fundamental in orchestrating cultural activities. However, the admirals also established their power in fields separate to those of their position. The position of admiral was a unicum in Medieval Europe since no other political institution had a similar figure and his contribution was crucial for the development of the Norman kingdom in Sicily. The intention of this work is to study the sphere of competences of the admirality and to give a global and definitive view of the impact of the Norman admirals between the second half of the 11th century and the end of the 12th.

Drums and Drum Ensembles along the Great Silk Road

This volume comprises fifteen selected papers in five chapters from the 27th ICTM Colloquium on Drums and Drum Ensembles along the Great Silk Road. It testifies to how human cultures are never created in seclusion. The richness of drums and drum ensembles, including their repertoires, are also connected to long-term exchanges in military affairs, trades, and religions of various peoples. Despite the obvious prevalence of drums among all peoples around the world, their understanding and their repertoires vary due to different contexts. The studies of music originating on the Silk Road presented in this volume pay particular attention to the multiple flows of knowledge between numerous distinctive regions in the narrower geographical and temporal scope.
