In Senior Chemistry Laboratory of S P College, there was a Senior Gas Man by the name Ghulam Muhammad Bhat who lived in the author’s neighborhood and had family-type relations with the author’s family. From 1971 to 1976, whenever both met he would say (in Kashmiri though)," Lalit you did a very good thing that you went out for higher studies and you will settle down outside Srinagar. I am very happy for you and your parents and sisters because they too will shift. Never think of settling down in Srinagar because there will be terrible bloodshed in the Valley and the Pandits will be forced to leave the Valley, and the preparations have already started post-creation of Bangladesh. You are good and noble people and I can’t see any harm being done to you all, therefore never think of coming back". Ghulam Muhammad Bhat was a member of Jamait-e-Islami and he always became very emotional about the author. The last time the author met him was in 1988 and had lunch in his house, and again he thanked the author for not having settled in Srinagar!!!

In the initial phase of the Obama administration, India’s ruling class and strategic community formed a perception that the spirit of strategic partnership between the two countries might be diluted on account of China looming large in the priorities of this administration. Despite occasional hiccups in their relationship, this perception was overshadowed by the administration’s recognition of India’s role as counterweight to China in the Asia-Pacific region. This book addresses and re-evaluates the perceptions, policies and perspectives of public policy makers and bureaucratic elites in both India and the US in setting and articulating the tone, tenor and substance of the multi-facete...

America's Challenge

The emergence of the People's Republic of China on the world scene constitutes the most significant event in world politics since the end of World War II. As the world's predominant political, economic, and military power, the United States faces a particularly significant challenge in responding to China's rising power and influence, especially in Asia. Offering a fresh perspective on current and future U.S. policy toward China, Michael Swaine examines the basic interests and beliefs behind U.S.-China relations, recent U.S. and Chinese policy practices in seven key areas, and future trends most likely to affect U.S. policy. American leaders, he concludes, must reexamine certain basic assumptions and approaches regarding America's position in the Western Pacific, integrate China policy more effectively into a broader Asian strategy, and recalibrate the U.S. balance between cooperative engagement and deterrence toward Beijing.

The Making of Early Kashmir

The Making of Early Kashmir

What is history? How does a land become a homeland? How are cultural identities formed? The Making of Early Kashmir explores these questions in relation to the birth of Kashmir and the discursive and material practices that shaped it up to the 12th century CE. Reinterpreting the first work of Kashmiri history, Kalhana’s Rajatarangini, this book argues that the text was history not despite being traditional Sanskrit poetry but because of it. It elaborated a poetics of place, implicating Kashmir’s sacred geography, a stringent critique of local politics, and a regional selfhood that transcended the limits of vernacularism.Combined with longue durée testimonies from art, material culture, script, and linguistics, this book jettisons the image of an isolated and insular Kashmir. It proposes a cultural formation that straddled the Western Himalayas and the Indic plains with Kashmir as the pivot. This is the story of the connected histories of the region and the rest of India.

Being born and brought up in Kashmir, paradise on earth, nestled in the highest and most glorious mountain range on earth, the Himalayas is indeed a reward of destiny. The landlocked valley of Kashmir has a unique history of art, culture, spirituality, food, and lifestyle, which the author weaves masterfully into a rich tapestry with his life experiences. An account of his recent visit to Kashmir in July 2016, which he calls a sentimental journey- a pilgrimage to the homeland, is captivating. It engages the reader with an intensely human journey of the life of the author in Kashmir and beyond from 1930's to the present.

Rapidly increasing aging population and environmental stressors are the two main global concerns of increasing incidence of a variety of pathologies in the modern society. The complex etiologies and pathologies cause major challenges to disease treatment. On the other hand, several herbs are known for their health-caring and disease-curing activities. Ashwagandha, a popular herb in Indian traditional home medicine, Ayurveda, has gathered increasing recognition in recent years when the chemically synthesized drugs for single target therapies showed limited success and adverse toxic effects. Ashwagandha is known as a powerful adaptogen and trusted to enhance function of the brain, reproductive system, cell-mediated immunity and increase the body's defense against disease, and possess anti-inflammatory, anticancer and anti-arthritic activities. In this book, for the first time, we provide a complete portrait on scientific understanding of the effects of Ashwagandha and its active principles for a variety of preventive and therapeutic activities.
