Explorations in Urban Practice
Both a learning platform and a pedagogical experiment, Urban School Ruhr is built upon the foundational belief that experts and amateurs can, together, build a space of critical exchange and knowledge transfer. USR prioritises exchange and dialogue that is not necessarily attached to specific outcomes, results or interventions in built reality, instead understanding conversation as the first step to co-producing cities. From Shelters to Dwellings
In Zaatari camp, Jordan, thousands of Syrian refugees were sheltered in tents and caravans, which they steadily appropriated and turned into dwellings that responded to their social and cultural needs. In this book, Ayham Dalal takes a closer look at this remarkable transformation. He draws on the tension between 'the shelter' and 'the dwelling' to unravel how new spaces unfold in between them, where refugees become architects and the camp is dismantled and reassembled. Kleinstadtforschung
Knapp 30 Prozent der Einwohner*innen Deutschlands leben in Kleinstädten, die in Speckgürteln der Metropolregionen oder in peripheren Räumen liegen. Im ländlichen Kontext können Kleinstädte wichtige Anker sein, anderswo dienen sie eher als Wohn- und Erholungsorte. Das alltägliche Zusammenleben in und die Zukunft von Kleinstädten handeln die Akteur*innen vor Ort auf vielfältige Weise aus. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes beleuchten die Heterogenität von Kleinstädten durch diverse Fallstudien mit unterschiedlichen methodischen Ansätzen. In Reflexionen dieser Zugänge zeigen sie die Potentiale einer interdisziplinären Kleinstadtforschung auf und nehmen Themen wie Digitalisierung, Mobilität und Migration in den Blick.
