He married Nancy Alley, daughter of David and Sarah Alley, in Wythe County, Virginia, in 1848. They had five children. He served in the Virginia Infantry, Confederate States Army, during the Civil War and died while a prisoner of war at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana, 12 August 1864.
