"The death of Laurence Sickman deprives The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Kansas City community of a distinguished scholar of Chinese art and an outstanding leader in the field of American art museums...This small volume is both memorial and celebration. It is intended as a tribute to the accomplishments of a much-respected friend and guide" -- From foreword.
This collection consists of offprints on Chinese art and, to a much lesser extent, on other Asian art subjects and miscellaneous art subjects. They were collected by Mr. Laurence Sickman, early buyer of Asian art for the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, curator of Oriental art for the Museum starting in 1935, and director of the Museum from 1953 to 1977. Many of the offprints are inscribed by their authors.
