Vocational Education

Vocational education in America is a large and diverse enterprise. Spanning both secondary and post-secondary education, the curriculum offers programs in a wide range of subjects including agricultural science, accounting, word processing, retailing, fashion, respiratory therapy, child care, carpentry, welding, electronics and computer programming. Although vocational education is intended to help prepare students for work, both inside and outside the home, many educators and policymakers believe it has a broader mission: to provide a concrete, understandable context for learning and applying academic skills and concepts. The vocational curriculum appeals to a diverse group of students. Ind...

The Policies of Reproduction at the Turn of the 21st Century

This pathbreaking volume on gender studies contains contributions from 15 international scholars in six countries on the topic of reproduction policies. It combines an analysis of child care policies with one of procreative policies for each country. From various fields of study around the world, the contributors present new research from many perspectives. However the combination of two research perspectives provides innovative insights into the relationship between family, gender, and population policies. Apart from the emphasis on single countries, the book also provides general conclusions on politics, medical science, and society on the still controversial topic of reproduction policies.

Performative Histories, Foundational Fictions

Films are integral to national imagination. Promotional publicity markets “domestic films” not only as entertaining, exciting, or moving, but also as topical and relevant in different ways. Reviewers assess new films with reference to other films and cultural products as well as social and political issues. Through such interpretive framings by contemporaries and later generations, popular cinema is embedded both in national imagination and endless intertextual and intermedial frameworks. Moreover, films themselves become signs to be cited and recycled as illustrations of cultural, social, and political history as well as national mentality. In the age of television, “old films” cont...

Gendered distinctions and differences in working life are produced by often hidden practices. What are they like? How do they work? The book creates, through its multidisciplinary approach and rich empirical data, a wide perspective on gendered practices in working life, from the level of labour market structures to the personal experiences of women and men. Some taken-for-granted assumptions of gender in social sciences and feminist research are challenged by a view through the 'Nordic window'.

The Limits of Patriarchy

In the mid-19th century, letters to newspapers in Finland began to condemn a practice known as home thievery, in which farm mistresses pilfered goods from their farms to sell behind the farm master’s back. Why did farm mistresses engage home thievery and why were writers so harsh in their disapproval of it? Why did many men in their letters nonetheless sympathize with women’s pilfering? What opinions did farm daughters express? This book explores theoretical concepts of agency and power applied to the 19th-century context and takes a closer look at the family patriarch, resistance to patriarchal power by farm mistresses and their daughters, and the identities of those Finnish men who already in the 1850s and 1860s sought to defend the rights of rural farm women.

Finnish women writers from the nineteenth century onwards have dealt with various problems concerning women's daily lives, their rights, their identities and their own voice. And these same questions can still be heard in contemporary women's literature. The articles in "Women's Voices" survey some of the ways in which Finnish female authors from the 1840s to the 1990s have dealt with these questions, and the solutions to these problems they have envisioned in their writing. How has the idea of freedom changed? What has been the relationship between female authors and the women's movement? What happens when female authors gradually become aware of the multiplicity of their identity? How do different literary genres affect the way women write? These are some of the questions focused on in Women's Voices. At the same time the volume presents an overview of the range of approaches to feminist criticism drawn on by Finnish feminist scholars.
