TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 672: Roundabouts: An Informational Guide - Second Edition explores the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of roundabouts. The report also addresses issues that may be useful in helping to explain the trade-offs associated with roundabouts. This report updates the U.S. Federal Highway Administration's Roundabouts: An Informational Guide, based on experience gained in the United States since that guide was published in 2000.

As of 2013, there were an estimated 3,200 roundabouts in use throughout the country. This synthesis documents and summarizes roundabout policies, guidance, and practices in place within state departments of transportation (DOTs) as of 2015. The primary focus of the synthesis is on roundabout selection and design with a secondary focus on performance analysis. Information used in this study was gathered through a literature review and a survey of state DOTs. Personnel from seven states were interviewed to create case examples and more specific information. Development of Roundabout Crash Prediction Models and Methods provides crash prediction models that quantify the expected safety performance of roundabouts for motorized and non-motorized road users. Safety performance factors (SPF) and crash modification factors (CMF) are predictive models that estimate expected crash frequencies. These models are used to identify locations where crash rates are higher than expected, to estimate safety benefits of a proposed project, and to compare the safety benefits of design alternatives. SPF and CMF models may help identify and prioritize locations for safety improvements, compare project alternatives by their expected safety benefits, and guide detailed design decisions to optimize safety. Research indicates that roundabouts provide substantial reductions in crashes, and this report determines SPF and CMF specifications for roundabouts.

The diverging diamond interchange (also known as a double crossover diamond interchange) is a relatively new design to the United States. This design can increase throughput and safety without widening bridge structures. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Research Report 959: Diverging Diamond Interchange Informational Guide, Second Edition presents a comprehensive guide to the design and operation of diverging diamond interchanges and updates material found in the FHWA's Diverging Diamond Interchange Informational Guide. A workshop summary is provided that includes an overview of key traffic signal timing concepts at diverging diamond interchanges--from terminology to timing considerations and from operational analysis to traffic signal equipment.
