Update of Highway Capacity Manual
Freeway congestion usually occurs at freeway merge, diverge, and weaving segments that have the potential to develop bottlenecks. To alleviate or mitigate the impacts of congestion at these segments, a number of active management operational strategies have been implemented such as ramp metering, hard shoulder running, managed lanes, and others. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Research Report 1038: Update of Highway Capacity Manual: Merge, Diverge, and Weaving Methodologies develops methodologies to update the HCM related to merge, diverge, and weaving methodologies and pilots the developed methodologies to demonstrate the full range of applicability of the proposed updates to the HCM. Supplemental to the report are NCHRP Web-Only Document 343: Traffic Modeling Document; proposed revisions to Chapters 13, 14, 27, and 28 of the HCM; a presentation summarizing the research; and spreadsheet-based computational engines implementing the proposed methods.
Reliability and Quality of Service Evaluation Methods for Rural Highways
This report presents a guide for traffic analysis of rural highways that connects the individual highway segments into a connected, cohesive, facility-level analysis. The Guide describes the development of an automobile level of service methodology for rural highways, the development of guidelines for assessing historical travel time reliability for rural highways, an overview of analysis methods for cycling on rural highways, and recommendations for bicycle operations research. The Guide should be of interest to state departments of transportation and other agencies charged with monitoring, maintaining, and improving rural highways of regional or statewide importance. The Guide is organized into three main parts: analysis methodology descriptions; an overview of the component Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) analysis methodologies that are incorporated in the rural highway analysis methodology for automobiles; and case studies using real-world routes to demonstrate the analysis methodologies in the Guide.
Empirically-based Performance Assessment and Simulation of Pedestrian Behavior at Unsignalized Crossings
The objective of this research was to provide an improved understanding of pedestrian-vehicle interaction at mid-block pedestrian crossings and develop methods that can be used in traffic operational analysis and microsimulation packages. Models describing driver yielding and pedestrian gap acceptance behavior were developed from field data collected at 27 mid-block pedestrian crossings in three states (Alabama, Florida, and North Carolina), encompassing two different types of land use: university campuses and downtown areas. Guide for Intersection Control Evaluation
"A variety of intersection control evaluation processes and metrics are used by highway agencies for evaluating intersection geometry and control alternatives and identifying an optimal geometric and control solution for an intersection. These processes usually address safety, operational, multimodal, environmental, right-of-way, and cost impacts and other considerations. However, there is no widely accepted procedure or guide for evaluating new intersections or modifications to an intersection. There is a need to develop a guide that incorporates rational processes, objective performance metrics, and appropriate tools to provide a consistent and objective intersection control evaluation. Such a guide will help highway agency personnel in making decisions regarding intersection type and control, and implementing safer, more balanced, and more cost-effective solutions.
