De correspondentie tussen Hendrik de Vries (1896-1989) enerzijds en H. Marsman (1899-1940), Roel Houwink (1899-1987) en Arthur Müller-Lehning (1899-2000) anderzijds verschaft inzicht in de curieuze poëticale opvattingen van De Vries en documenteert, naast veel meer, de fascinerende totstandkoming, met hulp van Marsman, van zijn verzamelbundel Nergal (1937). Aan het begin van de grotendeels eenzijdig bewaard gebleven correspondentie levert De Vries gedetailleerd commentaar op Marsmans poëzie en analyseert hij de novellen en kritische oordelen van Houwink. In de brieven schemeren bovendien de perikelen rond de breuk binnen het tijdschrift Het Getij door, waardoor deze een belangrijke bron zijn voor de geschiedschrijving van dit blad. De Vries vond het van belang 'dat kunstenaars elkaar als zoodanig en niet te veel als mensch leeren kennen'. Over en weer werd de correspondentie dan ook vooral benut als vehikel om ideeën te spuien en werk te verspreiden.
