Why Revival Tarries

Leonard Ravenhill's call to revival is as timely now as it was when ¹rst published over forty years ago. The message is fearless and often radical as he expounds on the disparity between the New Testament church and the church today. Why Revival Tarries contains the heart of his message. A.W. Tozer called Ravenhill "a man sent from God" who "appeared at [a] critical moment in history," just as the Old Testament prophets did. Included are questions for group and individual study.

A Treasury of Prayer

Pursue prayer with an energy that never tires, a persistency which will not be denied, and a courage that never fails. God is waiting to hear our prayers. E. M. Bounds, one of the most prolific and powerful writers on prayer, said, "Men and women are needed whose prayers will give to the world the utmost power of God, who will make His promises to blossom with rich and full results." A Treasury of Prayer is the best of seven books on prayer by E. M. Bounds in a single volume, compiled by preacher and intercessor Leonard Ravenhill. Read it until you believe it, then begin to pour out your heart to God in prayer until we experience a mighty visitation of God's presence. Nothing else will suffice "The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results." James 5:16 NLT

Rad-i-cal: Of or relating to the origin or root. New and different from what is traditional or ordinary. Of change or action, relating to or affecting the fundamental nature of something; far-reaching or thorough. Gone are the days when men walked into church and shook under the convicting power of God's presence. Instead, our dull, dry-eyed preaching tends to comfort the sinner and condone his sin. We need a return to the original New Testament type of praying and preaching. The early Church moved heaven and earth by their prayers; they changed hearts by their preaching. Peter's message on the day of Pentecost pierced his listeners to the heart. This word "pierced" is the same used when the soldier drove his spear into the side of Jesus, on the cross. Following the day of Pentecost, the disciples prayed for confidence and the place where they were gathered was shaken. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the Word of God boldly. If you want to find out how, then read RADICAL.

The Path of Prayer

Samuel Chadwick (1860-1932) was a Wesleyan Methodist minister, and a nonsense kind of preacher. His works have endured long after his death, and will doubtless continue to impact readers, as his practical approach and straight-forwards style make even the most complicated topic easy to grasp.

The Knowledge of the Holy

A.W. Tozer maintained that a theologian’s message must be ‘both timeless and timely’, a sentiment borne out in the fact that his writing on worship still acts as an urgent warning today. Tozer is primarily concerned with the loss of the concept of ‘majesty’ from the popular mind and more importantly from the thinking of the church. He sees the church as having surrendered her once lofty concept of God – not deliberately, but little by little and without her knowledge. With this comes a further loss of religious awe and a sense of the divine presence, of an appropriate spirit of worship and of our ability to withdraw inwardly to meet God in adoring silence. Tozer addresses this problem, to go back to the causes of the decline and to understand and correct the errors that have given rise to our devotional poverty. ‘It is impossible to keep our moral practices sound and our inward attitudes right while our idea of God is erroneous or inadequate,’ he tells us. What is needed is a restoration of our knowledge of the holy.

Heart Breathings is a fitting title for a book where words are only the vessel that somehow endeavors to hold, and show forth, the breathings of the spirit that is not flesh. There is a frustration when yearnings beyond words find themselves clothed in the only medium that can cause them to be tangible to others. These poems are the roarings and sighings and longings of the inarticulate soul trying to create a substance through which to transmit its feelings to others. Paul Ravenhill."
