Cardiac Remodeling: New Insights in Physiological and Pathological Adaptations

The effective management of Cardiac remodeling(CR), remains a major challenge. Heart failure remains the leading cause of death in industrialized countries. Yet, despite the enormity of the problem, effective therapeutic interventions remain elusive. In fact, several initially promising agents were found to decrease mortality in patients recovering from myocardial infarction. Cardiac remodeling is defined as molecular and interstitial changes, manifested clinically by changes in size, mass , geometry and function of the heart in response to certain aggression. Initially, ventricular remodeling aims to maintain stable cardiac function in situations of aggression.

This book discusses the benefits of application of different psychotherapy techniques, in addition to optimal medical approaches, in patients with ischemic heart disease. It explains the theoretical basis for use of these techniques, discusses the scientific evidence for their efficacy, and identifies important practical issues. Detailed attention is devoted to both well-established and recently developed approaches of proven value, as well as to future applications. In addition, practical insights are provided into the most effective ways of integrating psychotherapy with medical activities in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and rehabilitation centers. The authors are world experts in the fields of psychotherapy, pharmacology, and cardiology, who collectively provide a sound foundation for an interdisciplinary approach to patients with ischemic heart disease. Psychotherapy for Ischemic Heart Disease is both a textbook and a practical manual aimed particularly at cardiologists, psychologists, psychotherapists, and psychiatrists, but also internal medicine specialists, cardiac surgeons, general practitioners, rehabilitation doctors, students, nurses, and patients.

The Physiology of Inflammation – The Final Common Pathway to Disease

The Physiology of Inflammation – The Final Common Pathway to Disease

Chronic diseases are increasingly recognized as involving low grade inflammation, that is, a self-perpetuating tissue response to stress caused by exogenous or endogenous triggers, that progressively evokes danger-associated molecular pattern release, ultimately driving tissue damage and loss of function. This response is frequently unapparent clinically, thus the designation "low grade". This eBook comprises nineteen reviews and original articles that provide the most updated knowledge on the causes and roles of this inflammatory response in a variety of diseases and conditions. The editorial that precedes these articles not only summarizes each one, but provides a broader interpretation of the role of inflammation in health and a variety of disease conditions, the underlying mechanisms and the targets more promising for therapy. Finally, it also highlights the most relevant and emerging research topics that are already shaping future directions for the development of more fine-tuned and innovative therapies.

Urban Green Spaces and Human Health

An important aspect of sustainable and regenerative urban development is to improve collective well-being standards. The United Nations endorsed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015, which establishes seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet, and improve the lives and prospects of everyone and everywhere by 2030. Urban Green Spaces have a significant impact on the living condition and public health, which are closely associated with several SDGs including good health and well-being (SDG 3), clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), industry, innovation, and infrastructure (SDG 9), and sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11). Here, the concept of One Health gains high relevance by recognizing that interconnections among humans, animals, and environment is a key issue in public health and wellbeing, that stimulates interdisciplinary collaborations to develop a more holistic understanding and effective action against public health threats.
