Housing in Turkey
This book presents the major features of the path that Turkish housing system has followed since 2000. Its primary focus is to build an understanding of housing in Turkey from the policy, planning, and implementation perspectives in the 21st century, interwoven with the effects of neoliberalism. It investigates the social, spatial, and economic outcomes of the shift in philosophy and behaviour by the government regarding housing. The book discusses failures in housing outcomes as government failures, incorrect or inefficient regulations, lack of regulations, and lack of monitoring of the policy outcomes. Chapters on the housing-economy relationship, financialization and indebtedness, housing market experiences based on case studies, and the housing policy provide the reader with an opportunity to observe different outcomes in a world where housing challenges and issues are similar. Urban Poverty and Transport
"This paper reports the results of a survey of 5,000 households in the Greater Mumbai Region conducted in the winter of 2004. The goal of the survey was to better understand the demand for transport services by the poor, the factors affecting this demand, and the inter-linkages between transport decisions and other vital decisions such as where to live and work. This paper, the first of several research outputs, describes the salient facts about travel patterns in Mumbai for both poor and non-poor households. A striking finding of the survey is the extent to which all households-especially poor households-rely on walking. Overall, 44 percent of commuters in Mumbai walk to work. The proportion of the poor who walk to work is even higher-63 percent. Walking is an even higher modal share for nonwork than for work trips.

Cities in Contemporary Europe
European cities are at the centre of social, political and economic changes in Western Europe. This book proposes a new research agenda in urban sociology and politics applying primarily to European cities, in particular those that together make up the urban structure of Europe: a fabric of older cities of over 100,000 inhabitants, regional capitals and smaller state capitals. The contributors develop an analytical framework which views cities as local societies, and as collective factors and site for modes of governance. The three parts of the book examine the economics of cities, the social structures, and the modes and processes of governance. Each chapter comprises a comparison across several countries and examines critically the book's central theoretical perspective. This is not a book about the making of a Europe of cities but rather about how some cities can take advantage of their changing global and European environment.
