The project of constructing Asian irregular theology in East Asian perspective, based on life-word of Bamboo and social political reality of minjung, embraces Dr. Chung’s cross-cultural existence as he develops his long-standing interest and expertise in Christian minjung theology in new ways with the image of bamboo as a symbol for the theological perspective of grass roots marginality. Using the ancient Chinese story “The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove,” Dr. Chung engages with Christian eschatological discourse to support an aesthetical-utopian theological ethics that is opposed to an ethics concerned with legitimation of a socio-economic status quo. In addition, Dr. Chung’s develops his deep commitment to the Lutheran theology of the cross and the suffering Christ through the Buddhist concept of dukkha (suffering) to create, in the end, a genuinely East Asian contextual theology

The Heart Sutra

An illuminating in-depth study of one of the most well-known and recited Buddhist texts, by a renowned modern translator The Prajna Paramita Hridaya Sutra is among the best known of all the Buddhist scriptures. Chanted daily by many Zen practitioners, it is also studied extensively in the Tibetan tradition, and it has been regarded with interest more recently in the West in various fields of study—from philosophy to quantum physics. In just a few lines, it expresses the truth of impermanence and the release of suffering that results from the understanding of that truth with a breathtaking economy of language. Kazuaki Tanahashi’s guide to the Heart Sutra is the result of a life spent work...

Microbial OMICS, an asset to accelerate sustainability in agricultural and environmental microbiology

Microorganisms provide a number of ecosystem services to humans, enabling natural systems to benefit from a genetic reservoir for their fundamental functioning and sustainability. They also play an important role in the functioning of global ecosystems. The development of microbial omics has enabled the deciphering of precise microbial functions in various ecosystems, leading to the identification and characterization of numerous provisioning services, biological processes, and supporting services. Additionally, microbial omics research has resulted in the development of applied biotechnologies in areas such as food security, agriculture, aquaculture, human health, animal health, and environmental bioremediation processes.

The Forger's Creed

  • Categories: Art

The first in-depth look at the history and legacies of forgeries in Chinese art. In 1634, scholar-official Zhang Taijie (b. ca. 1588) published a book titled A Record of Treasured Paintings (C. Baohui lu), presenting an extensive catalogue of a purportedly vast painting collection he claimed to have built. However, the entire book is Zhang's meticulously crafted forgery; he even forged paintings to match the documentation, and profited from trading them. Furthermore, the book intriguingly mirrors unfounded art-historical claims of its time. Prominent figures like Dong Qichang (1555-1636) made entirely fabricated arguments to assert legitimate lineages in Chinese art, designed to create a fic...

Kingdoms in Peril, Volume 2

"Kingdoms in Peril is an epic historical novel covering the five hundred and fifty years of the Eastern Zhou dynasty, from the civil wars and invasions that marked the birth of a new regime in 771 BCE to the unification of China in 221 BCE. Kingdoms in Peril was written in the 1640s, at the very end of the Ming dynasty, by the great novelist Feng Menglong (1574-1646). In the course of the one hundred and eight chapters of the complete novel, he documents the collapse of the Zhou confederacy during the Spring and Autumn period (771-475 BCE) and the slow rebuilding of civil society during the Warring States era (475-221 BCE) which culminated in the unification of China under the First Emperor of the Qin dynasty (r. 246-221 BCE as king; r. 221-210 BCE as emperor). Thus overall this novel describes a grand arc, from stability to chaos and back again. As a novel about politics, much of the narrative in Kingdoms in Peril concentrates on the exercise of power"--

The International Conference on Intelligent Computing (ICIC) was formed to provide an annual forum dedicated to the emerging and challenging topics in artificial intel- gence, machine learning, pattern recognition, image processing, bioinformatics, and computational biology. It aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry to share ideas, problems, and solutions related to the m- tifaceted aspects of intelligent computing. ICIC 2010, held in Changsha, China, August 18-21, 2010, constituted the 6th - ternational Conference on Intelligent Computing. It built upon the success of ICIC 2009, ICIC 2008, ICIC 2007, ICIC 2006, and ICIC 2005, that were held in U...

A state-of-the-art review of original research, this book includes discussions of intramolecular photoadditoin of nucleophiles, electrophiles, and radical species to the activated aromatic ring; new methods for regio-, anantio-, and diastereoselective photooxygenations involving singlet oxygen mechanisms; and applications of microreactors for photochemical synthesis of large-ring compounds, photochemical rearrangement, photocycloaddition, and chiral photochemical synthesis. It covers the role of layered inorganic solids in the construction, characterization, and analysis of supramolecular assemblies of metal ions, molecules, metal complexes, and proteins, and more.
