Ringing the Changes
A code-generated project for print, Ringing the Changes is an homage to the art of bell-ringing. Ordinary folk in seventeenth-century England sought to ring all 7! (7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1=5040 ) permutations—all the different arrangements or “changes” possible—with seven bells. Their quest to perform mathematical patterns with their bodies is re-inaugurated here, using code and cited language. Experiment 116
Experiment 116 is a creative deformance of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116 using automatic machine translation. The poems begin in their original Shakespearean English and are then moved to another language, then another, then perhaps a third, and then back to English. In this way, the poem moves, the poem lives; it is reincarnated, reproduced, misunderstood, and mistaken. The essay that concludes the book explores how our practices of reading, writing, and revision can benefit from the use of free online translation tools. Experiment 116 invites readers to imagine translation errors and variants appearing during this process as a bridge between languages, striking unintentional emotional chords and producing creative depictions of life, as potentially codified by multi-lingual readers. In so doing, it enables a fugitive relation to idioms and stages a confrontation with multiple languages that function as the resources by which poets create, through language, cultural bridges. Experiment 116 asks its reader to consider automated algorithmic language translation as a site for the birth of a poetics of a global refugee idiolect.
A Noise Such as a Man Might Make: A Novel
Based on two iconic American novels, A Noise Such as a Man Might Make is a computer conflation using a well-known algorithm that has been applied to language since the middle of the twentieth century. The two source texts share many stylistic and thematic features, both narrating the ritualistic, circular struggle of a man and a boy against hostile environments. The other characters consist of the cold, hunger, physical pain, emotional pain, rain, snow, roads, and the sea. More musical than anecdotal, this novel aims to portray a certain model of masculinity held by Western society for centuries and finding a special place in warlike circumstances. A Noise Such as a Man Might Make is the history of a dying model of manhood, the now troubled paradigm of men as warriors and survivors. The book includes an Afterword by Nick Montfort.
