The Real Story of the Exodus

The Real Story of the Exodus

The story of the Exodus is one of the defining tales in the Old Testament. It tells of how the bond between God and the Israelites was forged, through His rescue of them from slavery and their long journey to the promised land of Israel. In Jewish culture it’s the event that connects them to that land, and even today many people cite it as justification for Israel’s politics – sometimes even for its existence. That makes it an important story on many levels and it’s vital to understand it before you can understand the political situation in the Middle East. It’s clear that the escape of the Israelites from captivity in Egypt is a story that still matters today. What really happened, though? Did it even happen at all? As always when religion is involved it can be difficult to dig down to the facts without running into resistance, either from skeptics who just dismiss the story or believers who resent it being questioned. There’s a lot of evidence there, however, and by piecing it together we can try to build up a picture of what – if anything – happened in the Middle East all those centuries ago. This short work examines both the truth and importance of the Exodus.

The Beat Killer

Lucien Carr is rarely, if ever, mentioned in the same breath as the more famous poets and authors of the Beat Generation such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, or William Burroughs. The Beats were known for views and work that was considered very radical in the 1940s, 1950s, and into the 1960s. For some, this work was shocking, for others it was freeing and inspired a new generation of writers. It all began with Carr. His conversations with Ginsberg about the "New Vision" and his rejection of traditional morality drew the Beats together and set the course for literary history. However, Carr's shocking murder of David Kammerer in 1944 altered his own life's course and left him searching for anonymity rather than the spotlight that would shine on the Beat Generation.

Feud

Back in the 1970s on the poverty stricken streets of the Bronx, New York, amongst the African-American community there was a rise in the popularity of the 'block party'. People like the Ghetto Brothers would plug their amps between the lamp posts. Dido Elizabeth Belle: A Biography

Dido Elizabeth Belle was born in 1761. It would be nearly 100 years before slavery was abolished. The date would be of little importance if not for one important factor: Belle's father was white, but her mother was African. It was an unthinkable act for the time, and Belle's life was destined for only bad things. But remarkably bad things did not happen. Belle was sent to live with her uncle, the Earl of Mansfield; here she was raised as a free woman and given the same privileged upbringing as her cousins. This book tells the inspiring true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, and how the life of a woman most people have never heard helped pave the way for future change.

The Wreck of the Whaleship Essex

In 1820, a sperm whale attacked and sunk the Whaleship Essex. 2000 miles off the coast of South America, the crew knew it would be a true feat to survive and make it to shore--any shore. It’s story became legendary; Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote about it; Edgar Allen Poe incorporated details of it in his only novel; and, most notoriously of them all, it served as the inspiration for Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. This account retraces the history of one of the most famous shipwrecks of all time.
