Body Parts on Planet Slum
Based on a year's research from within a Brazilian slum, this study follows a series of unemployed women who watch up to six hours of telenovelas a day, often in the midst of arduous physical labour in the home. The women suffer in relation to their bodies, but simultaneously invest in a masochistic glorification of suffering that links their lives to the soap operas, revealing disturbing valuations of the female body that traverse reality and fiction. Through its exploration of this daily integration of real suffering and fictional glamour and wealth, 'Body Parts on Planet Slum' reveals how fantasy and social exclusion can together induce a form of psychological survivalism, enabling these women to reconfigure the central features of their existence - their suffering, pleasure, sexuality and embodiment.

While the relationships between ethics and religion, and violence and politics, are of enduring interest, the interface between religion and violence is one of the most problematic features of the contemporary world. Following in the tradition of Max Weber's historical and comparative study of religions, this book explores the many ways in which religion and politics are both combined and separated across different world religions and societies. Reconstructing Female Sexuality and Deconstructing Male Anxiety
This interdisciplinary study undertakes a profound exploration of the representation and symbolism surrounding female genitalia, seeking to challenge entrenched patriarchal narratives. By delving into works by Charles Burns, Angela Carter, and Patrick Süskind, the analysis unveils the intricate interplay between female sexuality and the male psyche. Employing the works of feminist theorists such as Luce Irigaray, Julia Kristeva, Hélène Cixous, Barbara Creed, Riana Eisler, Bracha Ettinger, and Marija Gimbutas, this analysis places the androcentric views reflected in the works of Freud, Lacan and Jung under scrutiny. Departing from conventional approaches, this research celebrates the reproductive features of women, aiming to resurrect a primordial representation rooted in procreational power. Drawing from diverse fields including myth, psychology, archaeology, philosophy, and religion, the study illuminates the layers of unconscious thought embedded in literary works. Ultimately, this study advocates for a non-binary understanding of femininity, positioning the female reproductive body as an enduring gateway between animate and inanimate realms; both alluring and repelling.
