This book provides a description of cognitive impairment in the elderly population through the lens of Thai Traditional Medicine as it is practiced in northern Thailand. It provides an overview of Thai Traditional Medicine and the memory loss presented in elderly dementia. Some medicinal plants used by traditional Thai healers to treat cognitive decline and memory issues in the elderly are reviewed. Medicinal Plants of Northern Thailand for the Treatment of Cognitive Impairment in the Elderly provides readers with the detailed description of the in vitro screening of ten plants and those results. The bioactivity of these single plants exemplifies the success of using an ethnobotanical filter to identify plants with cognitive enhancing activity.

Russian Studies, Political Science, and the Philosophy of Technology

This volume presents state-of-the-art creative scholarship in political science and area studies with an emphasis on Russia. The contributors, all well-known in their specialties, share the conviction that advancement in the social sciences can only be achieved through plural methodological approaches and interaction with various disciplines. Their work in this collection provides critical analyses of key issues in Russian and post-Soviet studies. It explores the most fruitful ways of studying Russia with particular emphasis on the federal system, politics in the era of Putin, challenges of Russian foreign policy, and Russian attitudes toward democracy. The vagaries of democracy are also explored in articles on Georgia and Turkey. Additionally, this book examines the philosophy of technology with an emphasis on critical theory, eco-domination, and engineering ethics.

The Q’eqchi’ Maya of Belize have an extensive pharmacopoeia of medicinal plants used traditionally for reproductive health and fertility, utilizing more than 60 plant species for these health treatments. Ten species were selected for investigation of their estrogenic activity using a reporter gene assay. Nine of the species were estrogenic, four of the species were also antiestrogenic, and two of the extracts were cytotoxic to the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line. Women’s healing traditions are being lost in the Q’eqchi’ communities of Belize at an accelerated rate, due to a combination of factors including: migration from Guatemala disrupting traditional lines of knowledge transmission; perceived disapproval by biomedical authorities; women’s limited mobility due to domestic obligations; and lack of confidence stemming from the devaluation of women’s knowledge. Q’eqchi’ medicinal plant knowledge is highly gendered with women and men using different species in traditional health treatments. Revitalizing women’s healing practices is vital for maintaining the traditional knowledge needed to provide comprehensive healthcare for Belize’s indigenous communities.

The Good Eater

An enlightening and delicious look at how vegans – and their critics – are redefining the way the world eats in the twenty-first century. For years, there has been no doubt that widespread consumption of meat is both environmentally destructive and morally dubious. A growing chorus of scientists, health experts, and activists champion the benefits of a plant-based diet. Nevertheless, change has been slow to arrive, and the chasm between our appetites and our collective well-being seems impossibly vast. We know we must transition to a more plant-based world. But what would such a world look like, and how do we realistically get there? One group of people has been grappling with this quest...

Around Neversink: From the Rondout Reservoir to the Neversink Reservoir

"Around Neversink: From the Rondout Reservoir to the Neversink Reservoir takes readers back to rural life in the Catskill Mountains not long after its first settlers arrived. Before the land was commissioned to provide water for New York City's nine million residents, the area was known for some of the best trout fishing in the world. Red Hill, Peekamoose, Sundown, Branch, Frost Valley, Dewittville, Halls Mills, Willowemoc, Grahamsville, and Claryville were small communities mostly clustered around the banks of the headwaters of the Neversink River or the Rondout Creek. The area became a summer destination, and local farmhouses were converted into boardinghouses to accommodate seasonal travelers. In the 1900s, eminent domain took several communities to create the Rondout Reservoir and the Neversink Reservoir. As a result, Neversink Flats, Bittersweet, Eureka, Montela, and Lackawack ceased to exist. Today, residents and visitors enjoy a host of outdoor activities, including hiking on local mountains, snowmobiling on well-groomed trails, fishing in the reservoirs, bird watching, camping, and hunting." -- Publisher's description.
