Social Fabric
Social Fabric: Art and Activism in Contemporary Brazil brings together the work of ten artists who reflect upon the long-standing histories of oppressive power structures in the territory now known as Brazil. Blurring the line between art and activism and spanning installation, painting, performance, photography, sculpture, and video, these artists contribute to local and global conversations about the state of democracy, racial injustice, and the violence inflicted by the nation-state. This first English-language, book-length study of contemporary Brazilian art in relationship to activism assembles artist-authored texts, interviews, essays, and a conceptual mapping of Brazilian history to illuminate the function of art as a platform for critical engagement with the historical, political, and cultural configurations of a particular place. By refusing to remain neutral, these artists create spaces of vibrant and vital community and self-construction to explore how healing and justice may be possible, especially in the Black, LGBTQIA+, and Indigenous communities to which many of them belong.
Passionate Subjects/split Subjects in Twentieth-century Literature in Chile
Throughout the literary imaginaries of the twentieth century there is a reiteration of an authoritarian patriarchal pattern that permeates the social arena as well as the female subject, revealing the contradictions of the Chilean modernity/modernization process. The nation appears invariably determined by semi-feudal and semi-modern structures as well as split female modern subjects. Noticing this has led the author to write this book and investigate specifically the ways the discourse of modernity conflicts with the marriage contract in the construction of feminine subjectivity. Marriage is one of the modern protocols that resolve sexual difference through a pact that proclaims male protection in exchange for female obedience. Subordination of difference becomes the overarching feature guiding an incomplete modernity and its attainment in a hierarchical society.
Transnational Modern Languages
An Open Access edition of this book will be available on the Liverpool University Press website and the OAPEN library. In a world increasingly defined by the transnational and translingual, and by the pressures of globalization, it has become difficult to study culture as primarily a national phenomenon. A Handbook offers students across Modern Languages an introduction to the kind of methodological questions they need to look at culture transnationally. Each of the short essays takes a key concept in cultural study and suggests how it might be used to explore and illuminate some aspect of identity, mobility, translation, and cultural exchange across borders. The authors range over different language areas and their wide chronological reach provides broad coverage, as well as a flexible and practical methodology for studying cultures in a transnational framework. Architecture and Control
Architecture and Control makes a collective critical intervention into the relationship between architecture, including virtual architectures, and practices of control since the turn of the twentieth to twenty-first centuries.
