Maumee River 1835 takes the reader into the Maumee River area, during the 1835 period, for a close look at the activity and some of its people - old soldiers, the last of the Indians, the first white settlers and the land speculators. Topics treated include: the historic Indian - the French and British among them; the opening of the area by General Wayne in 1794; why the Maumee was shunned by those seeking new homes in the West and ignored by the New York shippers; steamboats on the Maumee and Lake Erie; who some of the first settlers were and how the towns were started - land speculators - and their "ghost towns;" the last of the Indians - follow a removal of some to the West, including the Ottawa Indian Chief Ocquinoxcy who led the last war party along the Maumee. The focus is on 1835 and its people, the scene is the years between the War of 1812 and the coming of the canals c. 1840, with a look back and ahead to place events in their proper perspective.

Changing a Leopard's Spots

‘Alex and Renias are what we need in these times of racial mistrust and lack of cohesion. I found this book compelling and “unputdownable” as it goes beyond wildlife to life, love, trust and community. It is about generosity of spirit. It serves as a reminder that humanity needs to respect, love and appreciate nature.’ – SELLO HATANG, Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation World-renowned wildlife trackers Alex van den Heever and Renias Mhlongo have spent three decades working together, tracking leopards and lions at Londolozi, jaguars in South America and grizzly bears in the United States. This book elaborates on the social and cultural phenomenon of national schools during the nineteenth century, via the less studied field of sculpture and using Belgium as a case study. The role, importance of, and emphasis on certain aspects of national identity evolved throughout the century, while a diverse array of criteria were indicated by commissioners, art critics, or artists that supposedly constituted a "national sculpture." By confronting the role and impact of the four most crucial actors within the artistic field (politics, education, exhibitions, public commissions) with a linear timeframe, this book offers a chronological as well as a thematic approach. Artists covered include Guillaume Geefs, Eugène Simonis, Charles Van der Stappen, Julien Dillens, Paul Devigne, Constantin Meunier, and George Minne.

A sourcebook on the city, therefore, is important for all those studying about, residing in, or traveling to Brussels, Belgium, Europe, and the North Atlantic region.
