Although Robert Morris (1734-1806), "the Financier of the American Revolution," was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution, a powerful committee chairman in the Continental Congress, an important figure in Pennsylvania politics, and perhaps the most prominent businessman of his day, he is today least known of the great national leaders of the Revolutionary era.This oversight is being rectified by this definitive publication project that transcribes and carefully annotates the Office of Finance diary, correspondence, and other official papers written by Morris during his administration as superintendent of finance from 1781 to 1784.

Confederate Correspondent
Soon after North Carolina seceded from the Union in May 1861, Jacob Nathaniel Raymer enlisted in the Confederate Army. A young man with a talent for keen observation who had pledged to keep those back home informed of the movements of Company C and the Fourth Regiment, he faithfully wrote letters to the Carolina Watchman and the Iredell Express. Unlike other contemporary correspondence, rather than being directed to an individual, Nat's letters were intended for the broader audience of area newspaper readers and portrayed the dogged determination of the southern soldiers in a descriptive style that brought the war and all its harsh realities home to his readers. The collection is transcribed primarily from the two newspapers and is complemented by brief narratives that place the letters within the Fourth Regiment's movements. Raymer's postwar experience is also documented through his personal correspondence.

Union Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman launched his three-army invasion from Chattanooga, Tennessee, in early May 1864, opposed by Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Tennessee. The Confederates fell back toward Atlanta in a series of withdrawals after Sherman's successive flanking maneuvers. Johnston was replaced by the more aggressive Gen. John Bell Hood in mid-July, who turned to a series of attacks to throw back and defeat Sherman on Atlanta's doorstep. The Army of Tennessee was besieged in the city that August and the city fell on September 2.
